Robin Roberts isn't just feeling stronger as she continues her recovery from myelodysplastic syndrome. She's feeling powerful.

"Strong like a bull," the Good Morning America anchor, 53, says in an interview airing Tuesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

"I am so thankful. I am so happy," she adds. "I have never been this happy nor healthy in such a long time."

Not that it's been easy, of course. Roberts has been through brutal chemotherapy and will continue what she calls "maintenance treatment" for the next two years. But so far, so good.

"In essence, you're sitting across from not quite a 2-year-old," she says. "In September I will be 2 years old. When you are in that kind of situation, your immune system is completely wiped out, and it's a rebirth. And I am just so incredibly thankful that I am doing as well as I am. I really am."

In her new book, Everybody's Got Something, Roberts also admits it wasn't always easy with girlfriend Amber Laign during her illness, admitting they would have fights. But they survived that, too.

"In the book, she takes the caregiver's point of view," says Roberts. "Sometimes we didn't see the same thing eye to eye, and I thought it was very powerful for people, because there's so many that care for their loved ones, and so to see her side of it and to see my side of it was pretty interesting."

Laign was at the taping of the show, but prefers to stay out of the spotlight. "She's here right now. I can't get her to come out," Roberts says.

To which DeGeneres jokingly replies: "Well, she came out, but anyway. It's too late for that now."
