Today's biggest radio hosts are mourning Casey Kasem after learning the 82-year-old legend has died.

Ryan Seacrest, who took over Kasem's American Top 40 show in 2004, paid tribute to his idol in a statement.

"It's a sad day for the broadcasting community and for radio listeners around the world," said Seacrest, 39. "When I was a kid, I would listen to Casey Kasem's AT40 show every weekend, and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ. So when decades later I took over his AT40 countdown show, it was a surreal moment."

Kasem hosted the nationally syndicated show for 24 years. He died Sunday after battling dementia – and being the center of a bitter and very public family dispute over his well-being.

But Seacrest remembered Kasem for his vibrant life and iconic career.

"Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company," he continued. "He'll be greatly missed."

Carson Daly, who hosts a morning show on Los Angeles's KAMP-FM, also gave his condolences.

"Long before MTV and the internet #CasyKasem made sure you were hearing the best music out there," he Tweeted on Sunday.
