Police in San Francisco are seeking the public's help in locating a missing 2-year-old girl whose mother was found dead last week in what police believe was a homicide.

A San Francisco Police Department spokesman tells PEOPLE that Nicole Fitts, 32, and her daughter, 2-year-old Arianna Fitts, were both reported missing April 5 – four days after Nicole was last seen alive.

Police believe that Arianna may have gone missing as long ago as late February, and characterize the child as being "at risk."

Detectives are not revealing who reported the mother and daughter missing, or who the last people to see them were.

City workers found Nicole's remains on Friday, just feet from San Francisco's John McLaren Park, police say.

"Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation and information continuously developing, we cannot disclose further details on how she was located," a statement from San Francisco authorities explains.

Both Fitts and her missing daughter have ties to San Mateo, Oakland, Fresno, Santa Cruz and the Silicon Valley, and regularly visited Southern California, police say.

Anyone who may have any information concerning Arianna's whereabouts or Nicole's homicide is encouraged to call (415) 553-1145.
