Sandra Bullock says she has a "very traditional family" – depending on how you define it.

"I have no idea what a 'traditional family' looks like anymore," the Oscar winner, 51, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's cover story.

"If a traditional home is one that is filled with lots of love and poop jokes, no sleep, schedule books filled with more kids' social events than adults' and lots of yelling over who touched who first ... then I have a very traditional family."

Asked if she would ever see herself remarrying, the mom of Louis, 5, and Laila, 3½, replies, "I don't think so, but I can see myself in a committed, safe relationship where there is lots of love and laughter, and 'making memories' is No. 1 on the to-do list."

Of fostering and adopting, she adds, "in this lifetime we are lucky, because we can make the family that makes us happiest. And sometimes you just need to go out and find it and bring it home!"
