The actor, 28, who will play bull rider Luke Collins in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks's The Longest Ride, dropped by the Professional Bull Riders' Last Cowboy Standing event in Las Vegas Friday night.
The easy-on-the-eyes new star "asked a lot about the sport to get more info on his character," a source tells PEOPLE. He also rubbed elbows with the toughest cowboys in the business, including Pistol Robinson and former world champions Silvano Alves and Guilherme Marchi.
On Thursday, Eastwood posted a photo of himself aboard a bull on Instagram.
No word on if he actually left the chute as part of his movie prep, but if he does try to ride bulls, it won't be easy: NFL star Chad Ochocinco tried his hand at a PBR bull in 2011 and hit the dirt hard after just 1.5 seconds. Bull riders "should be the highest-paid athletes in sports," he said.
The conclusion of Last Cowboy Standing airs on Sunday (4 p.m. ET) on CBS. The Longest Ride is expected to hit theaters next spring.
