A Nashville Police Department spokeswoman tells PEOPLE the teen suspect's name is being withheld because of his age.
The spokeswoman says the boy began fighting with his grandmother, Earline Hill, and 42-year-old mother, Sheryl Williams, after they tried rousing him from sleep for school.
Investigators claim the boy "made threatening statements before retrieving a handgun from a closet."

Police then allege the boy fired off several rounds inside the family's apartment. Two bullets struck his grandmother, while two others grazed his sister and nephew, according to the spokeswoman.
All three victims were treated and doctors have expressed confidence they'll make full recoveries, according to authorities.
The boy's mother was not harmed during the incident, police claim.
The suspect allegedly fled the scene on foot, ditching the gun inside a nearby apartment building. Police say they've recovered the weapon.
It didn't take long for police to catch up with the teen, whose family told investigators they had no idea he had a gun.
The unnamed teen has been charged with four counts of attempted homicide and one count of reckless endangerment.
