On Thursday, a Texas judge ordered former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel to avoid all contact with his ex-girlfriend after being indicted for misdemeanor assault stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident in January, PEOPLE confirms.

With hordes of media surrounding him, the embattled 23-year-old appeared in Dallas County criminal court with his parents and sister. Judge Roberto Canas told him he was also barred from possessing any firearms.

Bob Hinton, one of Manziel's attorneys, told reporters that Manziel will plead not guilty when he appears in court again at a June 24 docket hearing.

While Hinton wouldn't comment on the future of Manziel's football career, he said he hoped that "everyone will kiss and make up."

Manziel's assault charge stems from an incident in January, in which he allegedly struck his now ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, repeatedly, Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa tells PEOPLE.

Manziel was indicted in April.

Jim Darnell, the lead attorney in Manziel's case, added in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that his client has, "over the last 24 hours, fulfilled all the current requirements of the court. He looks forward to defending himself against the misdemeanor allegation and focusing on the next phases of his life, both personally and professionally."

Manziel's court appearance is the latest downturn for the former Heisman Trophy winner, who has been cut by Cleveland and dropped by sponsors and by two agents in recent months.

On Wednesday, Manziel turned himself in to police in Highland Park, Texas, on where he was booked on a misdemeanor assault charge. Afterward, he joked about his mugshot on social media, writing, "Just thankful I had a shirt this time … " in a now-deleted Twitter post. (In a 2012 mugshot, Manziel was not wearing a shirt.)
