The Blacklist is known for its twists, turns and surprises – and the season 1 finale Monday night was no exception.

"It's kind of keeping with what we've done all season," star Megan Boone told reporters about the freshman NBC drama's season finale while attending a press event last week. "I don't think we'd be doing it justice if we didn't make it a full-blown thriller."

And the thrills were many.

SPOILER ALERT: Plot developments to be revealed.

Early on in Monday night's finale, Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader) is being re-imprisoned and confesses that Liz (Boone) "was worth it," but the implications of what he says are not made entirely clear until the end of the episode (perhaps – more on that later).

First, viewers are presented with the shockingly swift murder of Agent Meera Malik (Parminder Nagra). Then, Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) nearly meets the same fate as Meera, but later we learn he is holding on in the ICU. In addition, the team almost catches Berlin!

And if that is not enough, Tom (Ryan Eggold) shoots Red before Liz shoots Tom, who then tells Liz, "Your father is still alive."

Are you still following?

Tom's revelation ultimately raises more questions than it answers. Earlier in the episode, Red had assured Liz that her father (whose identity has been kept secret from Liz for her own protection) had died saving her from their burning house.

But was he telling the truth? Could Liz's father be standing right in front of her? Just as the screen is fading to black, the camera catches a glimpse of Red's bare back covered in burns.

"What I really like about the finale is it leaves you in a place where you get a sense of where we're going for season 2," said Boone. "It's exciting and it's a new direction."
