Speaking to TV Guide's Damian Holbrook – who she has known since she was 12 years old – Fey talked about what a normal night at home with her husband Jeff Richmond and their two children Alice,10, and Penelope, 4, is like.
"We watch a lot of old movies on the weekends. We watch a lot of like Turner Classic movies, which I love," the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-creator said. "I have a poodle that I never trained right. So, at least once a night, I'm doing a Clorox wipe on the kitchen floor."
She continued, "That's mostly what our life is, cleaning up urine."
The Whiskey Tango Foxtrot star's father, Donald H. Fey, passed away in October, and while talking to her long time friend Tuesday, she opened up about the greatest thing she ever learned from him.
"I learned a lot of discipline and work ethic from my dad. My brother and I both did. He just had a high standard for us," she said.
To highlight that, she shared a funny story about a back-to-school night from when she was in fourth grade. "I had like a report about Indiana on the wall that I had like spelled Indiana wrong, and I caught s--- for that," she said. Fey also talked about her father's interest in painting and how after he died the family found poems and mystery novels he had written.
"He was real amazing guy," said Fey.
The Saturday Night Live vet hopes she's passing on her work ethic to her daughters, but she's worried that might not be the case. She joked she and Richmond work so much that they children are going to become "trustafarians."
" 'Oh, my mom is always tired. I'm never going to work,' " she joked about her daughters saying in the future.
Fey and Holbrook touched on many other topics during their hilarious hour-long conversations. Here are four other interesting and funny things revealed during the event:
1. There's a reason why she and Amy Poehler haven't done a series together
"We're regarded as comedy team, which is totally fine by me," the 30 Rock co-creator said. "People sometimes used to say, 'Why don't you guys do a series together?' or whatever. And the funny thing is that I think we both know this to be true, it's because we're actually both alphas. So, it works in shorts spurts, but I don't know if it would make a real dynasty."
2. She already knows who she is voting for this coming Emmy season.
This year, Fey was "really into" The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. So much so that she actually changed her Emmy voting status so she could vote in the acting category.
"I did it just so I could vote for Sterling K. Brown and Sarah Paulson," she revealed.
She also said, "Thank God" she played Marica Clark in the first season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt before people had a chance to see Paulson's riveting portrayal in The People vs. O.J..
3. Her daughter has the cutest catch phrase.
It's well known that her daughter Alice came up with "I want to go to there," one 30 Rock's indelible catchphrases. Now, she has a new one, "Thank your noticing," which her mother says she uses whenever someone says something mean.
4. She loves NBC's Smash
Speaking about the first time she and Poehler hosted the Golden Globes together in 2013, Fey said, "My only regret is that first year we didn't invite the cast of Smash to our party. Cause when is that going to happen again?"
Coincidentally, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt currently films on Smash's former stages in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She said the show's big sign is still there.
