Twin brothers are behind bars after they allegedly stabbed and seriously injured their parents, police said.

Kevin and Cody Martinez, 26, were booked in the Sacramento Jail on Monday after they were arrested for suspicion of attempted murder, Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Justin Brown tells PEOPLE. They are being held without bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday.

According to police, the brothers grabbed knives and stabbed their mother and stepfather multiple times in the upper body in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Following the February 28 attack, the brothers fled the scene in a vehicle and were later arrested at a nearby park.

Brown said the parents are in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

Neighbors said the relationship between the brothers and their parents were strained.

The mother “wants her kids there, but he doesn’t,” neighbor Kamiko Brown told the Sacramento Bee. “It’s an ongoing thing.”

Brown said the brothers routinely slept in the hallway because their stepfather did not allow them in their apartment, the paper reported.

A family member said the attack was unintentional. "This was just something gone horribly wrong," the family member told KXTV. "I know there was no intent of killing anybody or hurting anybody. I don't know what anybody had a knife for."
