The beautiful game has been America's sport of the future since 1972, but judging from the jubilant celebrations after the U.S. beat Ghana 2-1 in their opening match of the World Cup Monday night, U.S. soccer fandom may be turning a corner.
As Clint Dempsey scored 30 seconds in to give the U.S. their fastest goal ever, fans gathered outside Sporting Park in Kansas City erupted in jubilation. When John Brooks's surprise header in the closing minutes secured the win, it was as if July 4 had come three weeks early.
