It's been 15 months since Zach Braff launched a Kickstarter campaign to ask fans to fund his new movie, and now the film – Wish I Was Here – is about to be released.
The comedy/drama, which the former Scrubs star wrote with his brother Adam and directs, features Braff, 39, as a struggling actor married to Kate Hudson.
In this exclusive clip, she asks, "What's the happiest you've ever seen me?" and he replies it was when he saw her surfing, but couldn't actually see her smile. "The happiest you've ever seen me is a smile you never saw?" she replies.
Braff launched his Kickstarter campaign in April 2013, on the heels of the successful Veronica Mars fundraiser. He hoped to raise $2 million to make the film, and in the end 46,520 fans kicked in more than $3.1 million.
"There was a lot of Internet insanity," he admitted in an interview with The Star-Ledger. "Everyone and their mother weighed in with their thoughts, and a lot of misinformation. First and foremost: 'Hey, you have money, go make it yourself.' Well, I do have money, yeah, but I don't have $5.5 million to spend on a movie, you know?"
Braff, who is taking over the @peoplemag Twitter account on Monday, doesn't regret turning to Kickstarter and says he will "do everything and anything" to make his movies.
"This is what drives me," he told The Star-Ledger. "It's like what I'm saying in Wish I Was Here – this is it. This is life. This is all there is. These are the years you get, and if you're lucky you'll get 90 or so, but what are you going to do with them? Seize the day. Carpe diem, man."
Wish I Was Here opens on Friday.
