Zendaya Coleman set the record straight on her connection with NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. at Essence's Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in Los Angeles Thursday.
Dazzling in a red and white polka dot ensemble by Thakoon, Coleman, 19, addressed the dating chatter that amped up after Beckham, 23, joined her at the Universal Music Group's Grammy Awards afterparty.
"It's funny because first of all, we weren't on a date, so that's what I love!" Coleman said of the New York Giants wide receiver during her red carpet appearance. "But, hey, look: let's just say that I am an adult, you know what I'm saying? And I will choose to do things how I please to do it."
Speaking to TMZ, Coleman's father Kazembe Ajamu Coleman said the Grammys date was merely an "audition" for Beckham. So does that mean Coleman's dad has a say in the matter? "My dad is going to vet any guy that even looks at me, so absolutely!" answered Coleman.
She elaborated on the importance of her dad's opinion at Essence's star-studded event, saying, "If I decide to have my dad around to make sure dad vets them out and makes sure they are cool, they better go through dad first!" shared Coleman. "You know what I'm saying?"
Despite all the attention on her personal life, Coleman isn't going to lose her sense of humor about the situation. "It's cool – it's fine," she said. "I mean, here's the thing: it's not like I'm doing something crazy. I'm hanging out with somebody, so it's fine. I don't care."
Earlier this month, PEOPLE learned what sparked Coleman and Beckham's interest in each other. According to a source, "They both thought the other was really cute!"
