Born in Los Angeles to parents Fred and Patsy, Levine forms his first band, Kara's Flowers, while attending L.A.'s prestigious Brentwood Academy with best friend Jesse Carmichael. The group plays local bars and children's birthday parties before making a demo in 1996 that helps them land on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. The band eventually morphs into Maroon 5.
Love & Loss
Trading college for open mic nights, Levine falls for "the most beautiful girl" he's ever seen. Though the relationship doesn't last, the singer pours his heartache into music. "When we broke up, my heart was broken. I didn't have money or a job. All I had was a girl I was in love with and the dream of being a famous musician," he tells Paper magazine. "I was like, 'I need to turn this into something good or it's going to be a bad thing.'" The result is Maroon 5's debut album, Songs About Jane, which is re-released in October 2003, making its way into the top 10 albums chart.
Going for Gold
Following the success of their singles "This Love" and "She Will Be Loved," Maroon 5 picks up their first Grammy Award for best new artist. "These are my best friends, and this is the trippiest thing I've ever gone through in my life," Levine says in his acceptance speech. A year later, "This Love" earns the quintet their second statuette for best pop performance.
A 'Long' Shot
After collaborating with Kanye West on the hit "Heard Em Say," Levine and Maroon 5 release their sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long, which climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album also produces the No. 1 hit "Makes Me Wonder," which earns Maroon 5 their third Grammy for best pop performance.
Man About Starlets
With his heartthrob status on the rise, Levine gains a reputation as a ladies' man, reportedly romancing Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson and Maria Sharapova. Though he neither confirms nor denies the women he's involved with, he admits the rumors about his lifestyle are true. "There are two kinds of men. There are men who are f––king misogynist pigs, and then there are men who really love women, who think they're the most amazing people in the world. And that's me," he tells Details. "Maybe the reason I was promiscuous, and wanted to sleep with a lot of them, is that I love them so much."
A Model Romance
Sparks fly between Levine and Russian-born model Anne Vyalitsyna, whom he meets at a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue release party. "He knew what he signed up for," the Victoria's Secret Angel tells PEOPLE of her sexy career, adding, "He has a million girls drooling over him." Following more than two years of dating, the pair calls it quits in April 2012.
Levine joins Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton as a judge and mentor on the singing competition The Voice, which becomes a surprise hit for NBC. "This has been one of the coolest experiences of my life, and I've had a lot of cool experiences," Levine tells Rolling Stone of the reality show.
With his Voice success, Levine finds a new friend in country costar Shelton, and their "bromance" lands them on the cover of PEOPLE. "We started [complaining] about something early on, and I was like, 'I love this guy. He's as much of a pain as I am!'" Levine says of Shelton, who adds, "It's just like we're sitting around the bar, making jabs at each other."
Three months after splitting with Anne V, Levine steps out with Namibian model Behati Prinsloo. The pair is spotted enjoying a romantic dinner and hand-in-hand stroll through New York City.
Oh, the Horror!
Levine makes his small-screen debut on FX's American Horror Story: Asylum, starring alongside Jenna Dewan-Tatum as one half of a married couple who set out on their honeymoon to explore the country's most haunted locations. "I'm slightly apprehensive, because I don't know if I want to watch myself," he tells The Daily Beast of the show's notoriously graphic content, explaining, "I don't like that kind of stuff. It bugs me out."
