Pitt petitions to adopt Jolie's son and daughter, exactly two months after his divorce from Aniston is finalized. The following month, Jolie and Pitt visit the Dominican Republic, and as soon as the plane touches down they announce that Jolie is pregnant.

Shiloh Joins the Group
Shiloh Nouvel is born in Namibia. PEOPLE is the first magazine in the U.S. to print photos of the mother, father and baby. Just before the baby was born, PEOPLE names the Jolie-Pitt clan the World's Most Beautiful Family.

Jolie Mourns Mother
Jolie's mother, 56-year-old Marcheline Bertrand, dies after battling cancer for more than seven-and-a-half years, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. Bertrand was surrounded by Jolie, son James Haven and Pitt.
Angelina Adopts New Son
Jolie adopts 3-year-old Pax Thien from an orphanage outside Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Pitt is unable to accompany Jolie due to his filming schedule, but she brings 5-year-old Maddox and 2-year-old Zahara to welcome their new brother. Jolie filed for adoption solo because Vietnamese law makes it difficult for unmarried couples to adopt, but in April, she asks a California court to change her newly adopted son's last name to Jolie-Pitt.
Beauty Inside & Out
Jolie makes her fifth appearance on PEOPLE's Most Beautiful list, but this time around, it isn't all about her stunning physical attributes. The mother of four headlines the issue's "Beauty Inside & Out" feature with Pitt, highlighting her humanitarian work with refugees, AIDS orphans, and the Darfur genocide.

Coming Soon: The Jolie-Pitt Twins
On the blue carpet at the Film Independent's Spirit Awards, Jolie wears a belly-hugging black dress that reveals her pronounced baby bump. A source close to the couple tells PEOPLE that they are "thrilled to be adding to their brood," which consists of Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 1. In May, Jolie's Kung Fu Panda costar Jack Black accidentally breaks the news that the actress is carrying twins during a joint-interview with Jolie.
One Hot Mama!
With twins on the way, Jolie–who nabs a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Clint Eastwood's Changeling – appears on the July cover of Vanity Fair. That summer, her action flick Wanted pulls in an impressive $51 million in its opening weekend, and she tops the Hollywood Reporter's list of the highest-paid actresses.
The Jolie-Pitts Welcome Twins
Jolie and Pitt welcome twins, a boy, Knox Léon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, at the Fondation Lenval hospital in Nice, France. Just hours after cutting the umbilical cords of his newborn twins, Pitt tells the mayor of Nice, "I'm the happiest father ever." In August, the proud parents debut their twins on the cover of PEOPLE, where Jolie says, "It is chaos, but we are managing it and having a wonderful time."

Jolie makes her directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, a love story set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War. "I've had fun as an actress…but my heart has been on these foreign policy issues, and my interests are there," Jolie says. "So to be able to combine them and be part of international affairs that way, working toward solutions and being part of a good dialogue with good people, felt like a nice evolution to me."

They're Engaged!
Jolie, 36, and Pitt, 48, announce their engagement after the actress is spotted wearing a ring the actor designed with jeweler Robert Procop. "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy," Pitt's manager tells PEOPLE. "There's no date set at this time."
