After dating for three years, Hathaway, 28, and Adam Shulman, 30, announce they're engaged to wed. "I am very much in love with him, [only] Adam totally ruined my plan," the actress previously said of her boyfriend. "I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!"

Hathaway stars opposite Christian Bale as Selena Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, for director Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. During the film's opening weekend, tragedy strikes when a gunman opens fire at a midnight screening in Aurora, Colo., prompting the actress to respond, "My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act." Nonetheless, The Dark Knight Rises goes on to gross $3.5 billion worldwide.
Wedding Belle
Wearing a custom Valentino gown, Hathaway weds Shulman in front of 150 close family and friends during a private, low-key ceremony along the coast of Big Sur, Calif. "I'm so delighted by [Adam]," she previously said. "He's all the things you want a partner to be. I so find joy in his presence."

Fantastic Fantine
To play the tragic role of Les Misérables heroine Fantine, Hathaway crops her hair and sheds 25 lbs. "The idea was to look near death," she tells Vogue. "Looking back on the whole experience – and I don't judge it in any way – it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway." Her portrayal earns Hathaway a best supporting actress Golden Globe and SAG Award, as well as an Oscar nomination.
Change of a Dress
At the 2013 Academy Awards, Hathaway brings home the Best Supporting Actress statuette for Les Misérables – but causes a bigger stir with her pale pink Prada gown. The last-minute dress change – she was originally set to wear a design by longtime collaborator Valentino – left viewers abuzz and had Hathaway issuing a public apology for her Oscar dress switch.
