From Britney and K-Fed to Reese and Ryan: The Year's Biggest Breakups
MARRIED 2 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: After months of rumors that she was through with her rapping hubby, Spears made it official on Nov. 7, filing for divorce in L.A.
AFTERMATH: On Dec. 7 Brit defended her partying with new BFF Paris Hilton: "It's been so long since I've been out on the town with friends;" Fed-Ex said in an interview that he's doing "great." The pair have yet to hash out custody of sons Sean Preston, 1, and Jayden James, 3 months.
Paul McCartney & Heather Mills McCartney
MARRIED 3+ YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: They announced their split on May 17.
AFTERMATH: All you need is love? Hardly. After they separated, tales of Mills McCartney's past appeared in British tabs, alleging she was once a call girl (she denied it); 18-year-old nude photos of the land-mine activist also surfaced. McCartney got bad press as well—a draft of Mills McCartney's divorce petition, in which she claimed he was abusive to her, was leaked to the media, along with reports that she had audiotapes of him berating her. The futures of daughter Beatrice, 3, and Sir Paul's estimated $1.5 billion fortune (oops, no pre-nup) have yet to be decided. Meanwhile Mills McCartney has acted as her own attorney in some early hearings, and the former Beatle says he's seeing a shrink.
Denise Richards & Charlie Sheen
MARRIED 4 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: After a breakup and makeup in '05 and another breakup in January, things got really ugly in April when Richards accused Sheen of abusing drugs, cavorting with hookers and threatening to kill her—charges he called "baseless."
AFTERMATH: Truce! The pair even went on an October outing with kids Sam, 2, Lola, 1, and Sheen's new friend, actress Brooke Mueller, as well as Richards's guy, Richie Sambora (see below).
Whitney Houston & Bobby Brown
MARRIED 14 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: On Sept. 8, Houston filed for separation.
AFTERMATH: After years of talk of drug problems and marital strife, Houston looks healthier than she has in years—and is seeking custody of daughter Bobbi Kristina, 13. In January, she says, she'll return to the studio to make a "killer album" with her mentor, producer Clive Davis.
Heather Locklear & Richie Sambora
MARRIED 11 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE Days before Locklear (who has a daughter, Ava, 9, with Sambora) filed for divorce on Feb. 3, she allegedly found provocative photos e-mailed to the Bon Jovi guitarist by a woman they both knew.
AFTERMATH: Girl fight! Locklear's former buddy Denise Richards hooked up with Sambora three months after his split, while Locklear got cozy with comic David Spade but denied a romance. She's since finished shooting a new TV pilot, Women of a Certain Age.
Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillippe
MARRIED 7 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: The pair, who have two kids, Ava, 7, and Deacon, 3, sparked talk of a split when they bickered at an Oct. 16 party; two weeks later, they split.
AFTERMATH: Phillippe defended himself amid reports linking him to actress Abbie Cornish, 24: "I'm not a perfect person, but I'm not guilty of a lot of the things I have been accused of." In any case, Witherspoon is keeping busy—she's now filming the political thriller Rendition in Los Angeles.
Kate Hudson & Chris Robinson
MARRIED 5+ YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: "If things are good at home I don't care what happens on the road," Hudson recently said of her rocker husband. But after months apart, they split Aug. 14.
AFTERMATH: Hudson, linked to her You, Me and Dupree costar Owen Wilson, has been filming the comedy Fool's Gold with Matthew McConaughey in Australia. Robinson has been spotted with a new girlfriend and seeks joint custody of son Ryder, 2, who has spent time on location with his mom.
Sara Evans & Craig Schelske
MARRIED 13 YEARS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: The country singer filed her bombshell divorce petition on Oct. 12, accusing Schelske of having an affair with their nanny, collecting online sex ads and maintaining porn pics of himself and others on his computer.
AFTERMATH: Evans quit Dancing with the Stars to return to Nashville with kids Avery, Olivia and Audrey; Schelske, a former Republican congressional hopeful, denies the allegations (the nanny also says there was no affair) and accused Evans of cheating. The couple have feuded over $274,000 Evans says Schelske took from their bank account; custody of the kids is not yet decided.
Jennifer Aniston & Vince Vaughn
DATED 14 MONTHS
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: They started a relationship while filming The Breakup, but the pair had spent only a few days together after Vaughn left to film Fred Claus in England this September. Despite tabloid rumors that they had split months ago, the couple told PEOPLE that they parted ways in late October—after Aniston visited Vaughn in London.
AFTERMATH: With a breakup as low-key as their romance, there has been little drama: "They continue to be good friends today," say their reps. Aniston is back in L.A.; Vaughn's movie wraps later this month.
