Year [of The] Baby
From Tomkitten to Heidi Klum and Seal's Off-the-Runway Project, 2006 Saw Some Very Special Deliveries
Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel
8 LBS., 11 OZ.
NOVEMBER 22
Seal & Heidi Klum
On the morning of Nov. 22, Klum, 33, felt her first contraction. She and her husband, Seal, 43, headed for a Los Angeles hospital, and by that afternoon she'd had her baby. Yup, just like the designers on her hit TV show Project Runway, one moment Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel (named in part after a friend and one of Seal's ancestors) was in; the next, he was out—to the delight of brother Henry, 1, and sister Leni, 2. "They are so helpful," says Klum of Johan's siblings. "Leni helps us sing Lullabies when Johan has trouble falling asleep. We love that they will grow up close in age," she adds. "This is what Seal and I have always wanted: a home filled with children's laughter."
Barron William
8 LBS., 8 OZ.
MARCH 20
Donald & Melania Trump
The young apprentice's nursery takes up an entire floor of his family's penthouse. "I like to spend every minute with him," says Melania, 36 (pushing a gilded pram from Ellen DeGeneres). And Donald, 60, says he chips in too: "I love to feed the baby. Not because I have to, but because I love it."
Sadie Madison
MAY 6
Adam & Jackie Sandler
Even when announcing his daughter's birth on his Web site, the comedian, 40, couldn't resist going for a laugh: "Sandler had a kid. Kid is healthy. Wife is healthy. He's still a moron, and that's all that counts."
David
CUSTODY GRANTED ON OCTOBER 12
Madonna & Guy Ritchie
When the singer, 48, first met 15-month-old David in Malawi, "I was drawn to his face, something about him," she told Today. Once she took him home (the adoption won't be finalized until next year), she found out what that something was: "He's very flirtatious, and he's hysterically funny."
True Harlow
7 LBS., 12 OZ.
FEBRUARY 2
Joely Fisher & Chris Duddy
The actress, 39, wasn't afraid of an audience—even when giving birth. Surrounded by eight family members and friends, "I didn't feel at all self-conscious," says Fisher, who endured six hours of labor without an epidural. "I felt like a superhero."
Kingston James McGregor
7 LBS., 8 OZ.
MAY 26
Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale
After the birth of her first child, the busy singer-designer, 37, put her own spin on the whole balance thing. "I don't go off to work without him," she told the L.A. Times. "He makes everything so much fun."
Grier Hammond
7 LBS., 1 OZ.
APRIL 18
Brooke Shields & Chris Henchy
With no signs of postpartum depression the second time around, Shields, 41, says her family life "is as close to Norman Rockwell as possible."
Suri
7 LBS., 7 OZ.
APRIL 18
Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise
"She looks like Tom," Holmes told Vanity Fair, where the littlest Cruise made her big debut in October. Suri inherited Dad's exuberance too: In the middle of her parents' Italian nuptials, "it was quiet and then Suri cooed loudly," says one guest. "It was so sweet." As is Suri. "She's a glorious girl," Holmes said. "She's the miracle of our life."
Slater Josiah
5 LBS. 2 OZ.
JAN. 27
Bronwyn Golden
6 LBS. 2 OZ.
JAN. 27
Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance
"Bronwyn was always moving" in the womb, says Vance, 46, of his daughter, born via a surrogate along with twin brother Slater. "She came out like that, left arm in the air. She's drama!" Slater, though, "is chill," and that has rubbed off on Mom. Though Bassett, 48, still tracks bottles and changes in a spreadsheet, she says, "If I can put some clothes on by 5 p.m., it's quite an accomplishment."
Moses
8 LBS. 4 OZ.
APRIL 8
Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin
From the Garden of Eden to the Old Testament: Apple's little brother got his name from a 2003 Coldplay song ("Like Moses had power over sea/ So you've got power over me") that Martin, 29, dedicated to Paltrow, 34.
August Miklos Friedrich
10 LBS. 9 OZ.
JUNE 28
Mariska Hargitay & Peter Hermann
Not only did Hargitay lose her baby weight in no time flat, but the first-time mom, 42, also quickly mastered diaper changing. "Peter is like, 'You change him and he doesn't even cry,'" she said. "I was the ninja warrior of diapering!"
