Actor Tom Arnold, 48, filed for divorce from third wife Shelby Roos, 35, in Los Angeles on May 21. Arnold, who wed Roos in June 2002, had previously filed last August but later withdrew the divorce petition. Arnold now cites "irreconcilable differences" with Roos, a political consultant he met at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
BIRTHS
Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary, 38, gave birth to son Samuel David, her first child with partner Heather Poe, 46, on May 23 in Washington, D.C. "The vice president is pleased to be a grandfather for the sixth time," said his spokeswoman Megan McGinn. Mary, an AOL executive, and Poe, a former UPS manager, have been together 15 years.
EXPECTING
24 star Kim Raver, 40, and her husband of six years, French filmmaker Manuel Boyer, will say bonjour to their second child this fall. The new addition to the family will join big brother Luke, 4, shortly before Mom's new drama series, Lipstick Jungle, debuts on NBC.
LEGAL MATTERS
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host Ty Pennington, 42, was sentenced to 36 months probation after pleading no contest to DUI in Los Angeles May 25. He was also fined $1,500 and ordered to attend a 90-day alcohol education program as a result of his May 5 arrest for driving with a blood-alcohol level of .14 percent. (The legal limit in California is .08.) "Drinking and driving is never acceptable," Pennington said in a statement.... Citing insufficient evidence, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office announced on May 25 that actor Ryan O'Neal, 66, will not face assault or gun charges related to a Feb. 3 altercation with his son Griffin, 42. (O'Neal claimed he fired a warning shot at his son, who had swung a fireplace poker at him.) O'Neal's attorney tells PEOPLE, "He's very relieved, and he never should have been charged to begin with." Griffin's attorney, however, says of her client, "He's exploring his legal options."
DEATHS
New England Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill, 24, drowned after a jet skiing accident in Lake Pontchartrain. The New Orleans native and a female companion both fell from the craft in a rough current May 27. Although she managed to hold on to a pylon until rescuers arrived, his body was found by the Coast Guard the following day. Drafted by the Patriots in 2004, Hill spent much of his free time since Hurricane Katrina helping family members rebuild their homes.... Noah Maxin, 11, whose parents won court approval to abandon chemotherapy to treat his leukemia, died in Canton, Ohio, on May 17. Greg and Theresa Maxin sparked controversy in 2002 when they opted for holistic medicine after their son's disease was in remission. They put him back on chemotherapy, however, after the cancer returned four months later.
SETTLED DISPUTE
Keira Knightley, 22, won nearly $6,000 in libel damages May 24 from the publishers of Britain's Daily Mail, which ran a story that she claimed suggested she had lied about not having an eating disorder. A Jan. 11 article about a teenage girl's anorexia death featured a photo of Knightley on the beach and a quote from the child's mother implying that the actress was suffering from the condition. (Knightley has asserted publicly that she is not anorexic.) The Oscar nominee is donating her court winnings to the U.K.-based organization "beat," which supports people suffering from eating disorders.
