An Alarming Question
Tony Pastoors and Brady Pennig

Brady Pennig was enjoying a peaceful night's sleep April 5 when she was jolted awake at 2 a.m. by a blaring alarm clock. "I kept shutting off [my clock] and wondering why it wasn't going off," says Brady, 17, a junior at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, Minn. Finally, she got up, turned on the lights and discovered the source of the noise: A $10 Target alarm clock hidden under her bed. Attached to it was a note that said, "Do you know what time it is? Time for you to find a prom date." The culprit—her close friend Tony Pastoors, 18. Originally miffed, Brady accepted his offer the next day at school. They had a wonderful—and prank-free—prom, but, says Brady, "he may need to look out."

Adam Sandler as Cupid
Morgan Cook and Mark Dalmacio

The mysterious suitor had certainly gone all out. He sent sophomore Morgan Cook, 15, six clues about where on the South Tahoe High School campus to meet him on May 16. He set up streamers and chairs and gathered about 150 students at the California school. At 8:15 a.m., as Morgan nervously waited, someone launched into a personalized rendition of a song performed by Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer: "All I want to do is go to prom with you." Senior Mark Dalmacio, 17, emerged from the school. He handed Morgan a bouquet of roses as she accepted his invitation to the June 10 gala. "A lot of girls were envious," says Mark. "They thought it was very sweet."

A Yes or No Answer
Jake Harris and Pearson Mathews

For a moment, 17-year-old Pearson Mathews was living every student's nightmare: Her American history class at Atlanta's Pace Academy was going to have a pop quiz. She noticed that other students—and even her teacher—were giggling. Suddenly, Pearson, a junior, focused on question No. 3: "Pearson, Jake wants to know if you will go to prom with him." A moment later her longtime friend Jake Harris, 17, walked in and handed her a rose. "I knew if he put that much effort into asking me, he was going to be a fun date," Pearson says. As for the April 22 dance? "We ended up having the best time ever," she says.

A Sweet Surprise
Jeff Goodman and Brittany Roach

At Christmas, Jeff Goodman gave Brittany Roach gifts that began with the letters of her name: a bracelet, a rose, etc. So to ask her to the May 20 prom, he relied on the ABCs again. On April 28, Jeff, 18, a senior, bought chocolate chip cookies from the ice cream parlor where he and Brittany, 17, a junior, had gone on dates, then cut them into shapes that formed P-R-O-M. He handed them to her the next morning at L.A.'s University High School. "I realized it said, 'Prom.' I squealed, 'Yes!'" Brittany says. They had a "magical" time at the prom—and almost as much fun with the cookies. "We ended up having a cookie fight," Brittany says.
