For someone once known for her tomboyish outfits and skater-girl punk-pop songs, Avril Lavigne
went a decidedly more traditional route for her July 15 afternoon nuptials to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley. Wearing a custom-made ivory strapless organza Vera Wang gown and a long veil, the 21-year-old singer glided down the aisle to the sounds of a string ensemble. And the romantic setting—a lush private estate in Montecito, Calif.—came complete with a pond filled with swans and, according to one guest, "more roses than I've ever seen in my life." Says a pal: "She was like an angel. She looked so beautiful—just exquisite."
After a half-hour ceremony, the 110 guests (including music moguls Clive Davis and L.A. Reid) showered Lavigne and Whibley, 26, with white rose petals as they walked back up the aisle. For the dinner reception—held under a tent that planner Mindy Weiss decorated with scarlet velvet drapes, red roses and candelabras—Lavigne changed into a Chantilly lace Vera Wang gown and then shared her first dance with Whibley to the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris." Though the music stopped at the un-rock and roll hour of 10:30 p.m., there were no complaints. "The wedding was pretty unbelievable," says Lavigne's producer and friend Butch Walker. "It was storybook beautiful."
