Dear Diary ... These Americans sure can throw a party! ... xo, Posh." Yes, if the goal was to impress the guests of honor—fresh-off-the-jet Brits David and Victoria BeckhamTom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith most certainly succeeded with the July 22 Welcome to L.A. soiree they threw for their pals at the city's Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.

It had all the right ingredients: an intercontinental menu that featured U.S. standards like burgers and fries as well as U.K. favorites like bangers and mash; a performance by Stevie Wonder, who dedicated "My Cherie Amour" to the couple; and star guests from Rihanna to Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. "It was like a who's who in every area," says one attendee. At one point nearly all of them were on the dance floor. Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy shimmied like pros, Tom and Katie—before sharing a chocolate cupcake—danced to "Crazy in Love," and Jada Pinkett Smith (whose husband got up to rap at one point) was going so hard, she had to kick off her heels before the night was through. Not that anyone's bare feet took away from the glamour of the bash. "Posh makes people think about fashion," says the guest. "So everybody looked great."

DAVID & VICTORIA BECKHAM
A pro at making an entrance, Victoria chose a cocktail dress by Hervé Léger, while husband David scored in this Dior suit. To top things off? Diamond cuff links for him and earrings for her by Chopard.

YOU'RE INVITED!

TOM & KATIE
WILL & JADA
"The Beckhams were humble and sweet and a pleasure to meet," says Alfonso Ribeiro, one of the 500 who got an invitation (right). The Cruises and the Smiths, says another guest, "were introducing Victoria and David to everyone in the industry."

DANCE OFF!

Alfonso Ribeiro (below) showed off his moves to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" as his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air costar Will Smith (in white V-neck, center) looked on. Later, the crowd circled a pumped-up Jim Caviezel (far left). "He took over the dance floor," says a guest. Victoria Beckham caused a commotion herself when she and fellow Spice Girl Melanie Brown got down to their '97 hit "Wannabe." Says Ribeiro: "It was the greatest party I've ever been to! It was awesome."

A TOWER OF CUPCAKES!

After the dinner buffet, the partygoers were treated to one of Katie Holmes's favorite desserts: chocolate cupcakes. Another big treat of the night? Star spotting. Among the other guests attending the bash: Brooke Shields, Bruce Willis, Derek Luke, Matthew Perry, Star Jones Reynolds, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, Ron Howard and Jamie Foxx. "It wasn't the young Hollywood crowd," says a guest. "It was classy, elegant Hollywood in a fun way."
