On the Rebound
Fab who? After her breakup, Drew Barrymore steps out with director Spike Jonze

Farewell, Fabrizio; hello, Spike! Two months after splitting from Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, Music and Lyrics star Drew Barrymore, 32, appears to be living a real-life romance with music video director Spike Jonze. "They were very affectionate with each other, hugging and kissing all night," says an observer at Santa Monica's Ivy at the Shore restaurant March 13. "It was definitely a date."

Although a Barrymore pal says the two were "always friends," it seems the sparks started flying only recently. "They're both artsy and interested in things that aren't so mainstream," a friend says of the actress and Jonze, 37, who ended his marriage to fellow director Sofia Coppola in 2003. "They're extremely creative people." (Jonze also directed 1999's Being John Malkovich, starring Barrymore's BFF Cameron Diaz.) Still, Barrymore has appeared happy to play the singles scene since her January split with Moretti. (He, on the other hand, was linked to Kirsten Dunst almost immediately; see page 20.) Could Jonze tempt her back into coupledom so soon? "He's soft-spoken but a genius," says another Jonze friend. "He's really interesting." Reps for both declined to comment.

UMA AND ANDRE: IT'S OVER—AGAIN

Looks like love isn't necessarily better the second time around. On March 19 a rep for Uma Thurman confirmed that she and her hotelier boyfriend André Balazs—who first called it quits last March—have broken up once more. "It's definite," says the rep. (Thurman, 36, split with Ethan Hawke in 2003.) Since rekindling their rocky three-year relationship, the couple were often spotted in New York City and St. Bart's. Lately, however, the businessman, 50, had been noticeably absent. "I haven't seen them together for at least three weeks," says a source on the set of Thurman's comedy The Accidental Husband. A rep for Balazs had no comment.

KIRSTEN'S NEW GUY

Kirsten Dunst's latest musical companion? The actress, 24—most recently linked to the Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti—is dating Razorlight lead singer Johnny Borrell. "She came to their gig [March 9] and they've been going out since," says his rep. An insider adds, "They were all over Austin [where Borrell performed at the South by Southwest Festival], very lovey-dovey. They weren't hiding anything." (Dunst's rep had no comment.)

Nicole: Dizzy on the Set?

For the fifth season of The Simple Life, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton will be counselors at a health camp. But as they guide campers on exercise and nutrition, Richie's own health seems to be taking main stage. "Four or five times she's felt really faint and almost passed out," a source says of Richie. (Most notably, she went to the hospital March 2 for dehydration and reportedly collapsed again March 14.) "She has to go into her trailer for a good part of the day." What's going on? "In her ongoing effort to focus on her well-being, Nicole has recently been diagnosed with hypoglycemia," says her rep. "[She] is taking steps to manage it." Adds a show rep: "Nicole has reported to work each day and the results have been fantastic."

Which Dancing star will get the boot March 27? People.com readers weighed in:
49% BILLY RAY CYRUS

Heather Mills proved she can boogie with the best of them, despite her artificial limb. "I was not at all nervous!" Mills (who lost her left leg in a 1993 motorcycle accident) told Scoop March 19. After performing a seemingly effortless fox trot, she earned solid scores—not to mention the admiration of the DWTS cast. "You've got more guts than Rambo," said judge Bruno Tonioli. Adds Mills's partner Jonathan Roberts: "Heather works so hard—it's like there's nothing she can't overcome."

MENTOR MCPHEE

Last year's runner-up Katharine McPhee, 23, tells Scoop she is tuning in to watch the new crop of Idol hopefuls. Any words of wisdom for them? "God help your soul!" she joked at a March 14 Bebe Sport event in West Hollywood. "No. I would say that it's a long haul—and definitely stressful—but try to enjoy it. I can look back now and say I really did have a good time."

OFF CAMERA
Who was that girl they kept showing in the audience? Ashley, 12, from Riverside, Calif., who won seats at the show from online ticket source ocatv.com. "This is unbelievable!" the teary tween told Scoop as she scored autographs from all the contestants.... No preperformance nerves for Blake Lewis, who broke into an impromptu tap dance just seconds before singing.

Q + A

KERRY IS SO VERY ...
She can play naughty, she can play nice—but Kerry Washington would rather not play safe

She was a devoted wife in Ray and a cheating one in The Last King of Scotland. Now, in Chris Rock's I Think I Love My Wife, Kerry Washington is a wife's worst nightmare—the bombshell other woman. The newly single actress, 30, talked to Natasha Stoynoff.

We hear you went out on a limb for your new movie?
Yeah, I had to drop dollar bills out the window of a Manhattan high-rise for one scene and I knelt [on the ledge]. The producers freaked out—"We don't have insurance! We don't have a net!" But my character is not a play-it-safe kind of girl.

That seemed to hold true for her cleavage as well.
Chris Rock said, "I want her to be curvaceous!" So I was stuffing my bra with three layers of those chicken cutlet things you buy at Victoria's Secret ...

Those must come in handy on the dating scene. How's single life?
It's strange being out there again after being off the market for so long. I'm trying to spend as much time with myself as possible. I kind of feel like I'm dating me.

Maybe you should do a film with you. It would give you a good shot at an Oscar, just like your costars Jamie Foxx and Forest Whitaker.
I hope every Hollywood actor wants me to play his wife! He's almost guaranteed an Oscar! Although ... the weekend Forest won, the Wayans brothers won a Razzie [for our movie Little Man]. I can't guarantee what you'll win, but you will win something.

Do you get recognized a lot?
I was at a flea market in Guatemala and these kids kept saying, "Save the lost dogs! Save the lost dogs!" After an hour I finally realized they recognized me from Save the Last Dance. Something got lost in the translation.

Next up, the Fantastic Four sequel. If you could have any super power, what would it be?
The power to make people love themselves and others.

That's so noble.
Well, I'd use it on myself too!
