SANDRA BULLOCK

"It is truly refreshing to have Sandra Bullock, who is a model citizen and the girl-next-door, adorn your cover."
Brenda Rooney

It was a pleasure to read about someone as cool as Sandra Bullock. Even though she is famous and wealthy, she is still extremely down-to-earth. She uses her money to help others, and that clearly makes her happy. And reading about how she has adopted stray dogs touched my heart. She is truly unique.

As a big fan of Sandra Bullock's, I was glad to learn that stardom has not gone to her head. She loves her life and her family and is putting her success to good use. I applaud this amazing woman.

THOMAS ROBERTS

Bravo to CNN anchor Thomas Roberts for the courage he displayed by coming forward with his story of sexual abuse by the chaplain of his Catholic high school. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of thousands of children who carry this burden in silence. To learn how adults can recognize and prevent child sexual abuse, visit the Darkness to Light Web site at www.darkness2light.org. The world can be a frightening place. Our kids need to know we're doing our best to keep them safe.

Thomas Roberts grew up with my children, and he is still a very important member of our family. He is loved by many and we are proud of him. Thomas put everything on the line to bring a sexual predator to justice, thereby helping others to have the strength to come forward. As for Father Jeff Toohey, he should be defrocked.

RICHARD HATCH

I can't say I feel bad that Survivor's Richard Hatch is serving 51 months for tax evasion. What did he think would happen when he tried to get away without paying taxes? Did he think a correctional facility would be a country club? I can't believe that whiner won the show.

After reading your interview with Richard Hatch, all I can say is that it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Can you say karma?

LAST SLAVES OF MISSISSIPPI

I found the account of the Walls family who were held like slaves for decades very moving. It is very hard for me to understand how this atrocity could have continued for as long as it did. There are many aspects of our country's history that need to be brought to light. This is one of those cases.

A VOICE FOR ANIMALS

Readers applauded our story on Dr. Melinda Merck, a forensic veterinarian who provides evidence to help bring animal abusers to justice. "It is good to know that someone out there is doing something to protect our animal friends and give them a voice," writes Jane Lowes of Monument, Colo. Many readers also stressed the need to toughen penalties for those who commit crimes against animals—one reason being that it might ultimately help reduce crimes against humans. Cynthia Fravel of Fort Collins, Colo., who has had a counseling practice for more than 30 years, notes that people convicted of assaulting other people frequently have "a history of sadistically abusing animals. If we as a society intervened more aggressively with animal abusers, we would surely see fewer crimes against people later."

Corrections
In our March 19 issue, we incorrectly described the title character of the TV show Maude. Maude was Edith Bunker's cousin. In our March 26 issue, we stated that Dean McDermott has a son from a previous marriage. McDermott also has a daughter. We regret these errors.
