Thomas Roberts grew up with my children, and he is still a very important member of our family. He is loved by many and we are proud of him. Thomas put everything on the line to bring a sexual predator to justice, thereby helping others to have the strength to come forward. As for Father Jeff Toohey, he should be defrocked.

I can't say I feel bad that Survivor's Richard Hatch is serving 51 months for tax evasion. What did he think would happen when he tried to get away without paying taxes? Did he think a correctional facility would be a country club? I can't believe that whiner won the show.

I found the account of the Walls family who were held like slaves for decades very moving. It is very hard for me to understand how this atrocity could have continued for as long as it did. There are many aspects of our country's history that need to be brought to light. This is one of those cases.

A VOICE FOR ANIMALS
Readers applauded our story on Dr. Melinda Merck, a forensic veterinarian who provides evidence to help bring animal abusers to justice. "It is good to know that someone out there is doing something to protect our animal friends and give them a voice," writes Jane Lowes of Monument, Colo. Many readers also stressed the need to toughen penalties for those who commit crimes against animals—one reason being that it might ultimately help reduce crimes against humans. Cynthia Fravel of Fort Collins, Colo., who has had a counseling practice for more than 30 years, notes that people convicted of assaulting other people frequently have "a history of sadistically abusing animals. If we as a society intervened more aggressively with animal abusers, we would surely see fewer crimes against people later."

In our March 19 issue, we incorrectly described the title character of the TV show Maude. Maude was Edith Bunker's cousin. In our March 26 issue, we stated that Dean McDermott has a son from a previous marriage. McDermott also has a daughter. We regret these errors.
