Let's Get the Party Started!
Pop Singer Pink Marries Motocross Daredevil Carey Hart in a Beachside Affair That Mixes Romance and Rock and Roll
A couple of yoga poses and a soothing bowl of miso soup from Mom helped calm her nerves, and by late afternoon Pink, 26, and Hart, 30, were exchanging teary vows on a beach at the Four Seasons Resort in Costa Rica before 140 guests (including pal Lisa Marie Presley). An elaborate affair that mixed high extravagance (more than 10,000 roses) with a rock and roll edge (their first dance was to a song from Natural Born Killers), the wedding “was the best time ever,” says Pink. But it was the couple's self-penned vows (see box) that proved to be the event's high point. “Carey's friends are not exactly the fuzzy kind, and they were crying,” says bridesmaid Amasetta Mudd. “It was so honest and emotional.”
The wedding capped three days of festivities in Costa Rica, where the couple kicked things off with a mojito-fueled luau on Jan. 5. At a rehearsal dinner the next night, a slide show with photos of the bride and groom as children was followed by a toast from the bride's father, James Moore. “He said, ‘I was trying to figure out who the heck would marry my daughter—and there he is!’” says bridesmaid Shanique Jackson. “He said, ‘I couldn't imagine anyone more perfect for her.’”
The newlyweds, who briefly separated in 2003 and who are both children of divorce, admit to having to overcome their own doubts about becoming Mr. and Mrs. “I never really believed in marriage and I still don't somewhat, but I also believe you can make things your own,” says Pink, who proposed to Hart at a motocross race. Adds Hart: “I knew within the first weeks after meeting her that I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life.”
In planning her dream nuptials, the bride “wanted it to be elegant and fun at the same time,” says wedding planner Kara Keaney. Hence the “goth” ivory-and-black Monique Lhuillier gown Pink says she chose because “I wanted to make Carey's heart stop for a second.” And? “When she and her dad came up, I had the biggest lump in my throat and I thought, ‘I can't be like this the whole time! I'll pass out!’” says Hart, who put his own spin on groomswear with a black Gucci jacket lined with silk-screened '50s-style pinup pictures of his bride.
Following the ceremony, guests moved into a tent decorated in—what else?—pink, for a four-course dinner. But the party didn't really get started until it shifted into the ballroom. “Love Song,” which Pink wrote for Hart, was played while they cut their cake (topped with a bride and groom popping a wheelie). “They have a deep appreciation for each other's personalities,” says guest L.A. Reid, chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, who first signed Pink. Adds their pal, jeweler Stephen Webster: “They're both crazy in their own way. But they look out for each other.”
Next came several rounds of karaoke (“I sang ‘Sweet Child O' Mine,’” says Pink, whose new album is due in March. “I can sound just like Axl Rose!”) and a live set by rockabilly band Dick Brave and the Backbeats, as well as tunes spun by DJ Max Goodwin, a Hart pal. “[Pink] danced until 5 in the morning,” says her friend and makeup artist Billy B. “She didn't leave once!”
After the bash, the exhausted couple returned to their L.A. home before jetting (with their four dogs) to a snowboarding honeymoon. And although they say the pitter-patter of little Pinks is still a ways off, “we always talk about how, when we have kids, what are they going to rebel against?” says the new Mrs. Hart with a laugh. “They'll end up playing chess and wearing little uniforms!”
