It was the moment Brian Reyes had long dreamed about: One of his dresses was about to hit the red carpet at a Hollywood awards show. And yet just as America Ferrera was stepping out at the Golden Globes in the deep purple gown he had custom-made for her, Reyes was ... stuck at a Los Angeles airport. "Everyone was watching football or sports on every single television!" he recalls. "I thought, 'Will I be really rude if I tell these 25 people that I need to put the Golden Globes on?'"

If Reyes, 26, hasn't yet learned to be a demanding design diva, it isn't for lack of success. Since launching his self-named line out of the Tribeca apartment he shares with his boyfriend, a music industry exec, in 2005, he has landed his designs in stores like Barneys New York and Nordstrom and won a growing number of celeb fans with playfully sophisticated items such as plaid cocktail dresses. "He attends to every detail of his designs," says Beyoncé, who chose a crystal-and-wood-beaded Reyes top for her 2007 tour publicity photos, "so you always have the perfect fit."

Reyes, who grew up outside Fort Lauderdale, perfected his skills with gigs at Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta before branching out on his own at age 24. "I figured, if I failed, I was still young enough to do something new," he says. And even though he now works out of a Fifth Avenue design studio and unveiled his latest collection at New York Fashion Week on Feb. 9, Reyes doesn't take anything for granted. When he finally managed to find a free TV set at the airport, he spotted Ferrera in his creation–and thought, "Oh my gosh, I hope nothing happens to the dress!"
