He's the Big Dog
Rufus, a Colored Bull Terrier, Trotted Out Heart, Poise And—in the Judge's Words—"his Classic Profile' to Triumph at the 130th Westminster Dog Show
NAME: Rufus, a.k.a. Ch. Rocky Top's Sundance Kid
AGE: Turns 6 on April 8
WEIGHT: 75 lbs.
HOMETOWN: Holmdel, N.J.
TAIL OF THE TAPE: After taking top honors at NBC's National Dog Show last November, he became the first colored bull terrier ever to win "Best in Show" at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Feb. 14 in New York City.
MUG SHOT: "The shape of the face is off-putting to some people," says Tom Bishop, 50, one of Rufus's owners, "but my wife [Barbara] thinks he looks like Brad Pitt. I don't see it."
POWER LUNCH: While in training for a show, "we have him on a BARF diet," says Bishop, "which is [an acronym for] bones and raw food." As for treats, Rufus's favorites include Krispy Kremes and Halls cough drops.
FIGHT SONG: Before heading into the ring at the Westminster competition, Bishop calmed Rufus's nerves by humming the theme from The Addams Family.
BEST IN SHOWING OFF: At home, Rufus likes to "hucklebuck," a terrier term for leaping in the air and banging its rear into a door. Otherwise, he's a "couch potato," says Bishop. "We have four of them at home, and he's the king. He sleeps in bed with us on the pillow."
WHAT'S NEXT: Now that he's won the Super Bowl of dog shows, Rufus is on the way to retirement. But Bishop now has his eye on Rufus's 7-month-old offspring Serafina. "Hopefully she'll be where he is someday."
