His fans consider him a thrilla in Vanilla, but turn up the heat and Ice melts. Why do Mack rappers dis him? "None of it is my fault," he insists. "All I know is I'm here, and there's 11 million people that like me—most of them girls. I'm not in this for the money. All I'm worried about is the ladies and how nice everybody's treating." Still, he sometimes feels a little like crushed Ice. "What everybody sees is this big glamour life," he explains, "but you don't appreciate things as much anymore. You don't appreciate that fancy car like you would if you had to work twice as hard to get it. So the money is not as big a deal as you'd think. You know what I'm saying?" As they say in rap, word to your mother. What he'd really like is to break the ice with a young lady. "But it's impossible right now because everybody's got me doing this and that." At least Van' gets to meet a girl in his first starring movie role after his hip-hop cameo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. "It's called Cool as Ice," he says of the possible winter release. "It's a kind of rap-meets-motorcycle movie. I fall in love with some girl. We have a bad meeting at first because I jump over a fence and knock her off her horse, and she punches me in the stomach. It's real cool." Could it be art imitating life?
