Earlier this month Emmett added an old friend, Indiana waitress Nancy Hanns, 28, to his act in the Emmett Kelly Jr. All-Star Circus. In the act, Emmett plays a magician attempting to levitate Nancy, whose spangled red, white and blue dress has a way of coming apart to reveal more red, white and blue—and more Nancy.
That bit has worked so well that Emmett and Nancy decided to put a more permanent act together: marriage. It was done the Big Top way. Nancy, still in her breakaway dress, and Emmett, in his best tatters, boarded Kathy, a 12-year-old elephant, in a Philadelphia street and did their howdah duty: wedding No. 4 for Emmett, No. 2 for Nancy. One thing led to another, said Nancy, until there were "just us, the elephant and the judge."
The solemnity of the occasion did not ruffle Kelly, 51. He kept his hat on throughout the ceremony and, in keeping with his Weary Willie character, nodded assent to the questions of officiating Judge Joseph Glancey.
Afterward, though, Willie broke his silence. "She's a little green," he said of his new spouse. "But I think in time she's going to work out real great." The couple will spend their honeymoon perfecting a wire-walking act.
