Picks and Pans Review: One Night with Blue Note, Vols. I and Ii
- Ralph Novak,
- Ned Geeslin.
There is no hype to these tapes, just musicians standing and sitting around playing music. But what musicians, and what music. Directed by John Jopson, the two tapes are excerpts from the five-hour concert at New York's Town Hall last February celebrating the reactivation of the Blue Note jazz label. McCoy Tyner plays a delicate piano solo on Sweet & Lovely, pianist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard bristle with good-natured spirit on Cantaloupe Island, and Grover Washington Jr. and guitarist Kenny Burrell combine on Summertime, among other highlights. Jopson focuses on faces and hands, capturing the joy that surged through what were often strangely formal proceedings. (Blue Note, $29.95 each)
