Fashion model Natasha Henstridge, 20, makes her feature film debut as a half alien, half woman in Species, the sci-fi thriller due July 7 about a woman created from a DNA experiment. The actress doesn't mind that she spends much of her screen time in the buff. "You get used to it," says the Canadian-born Henstridge, who got her start as a model when she landed on the cover of French Cosmo at 15. "I really don't have a problem with nudity. It's done in a sincere, innocent way, and it's necessary to this film. She's an alien. Where would she get clothes? It's not like she hangs out at the mall." Plus, the creature features some unusual talents. "I liked the part where my tongue goes through the back of a guy's head," Henstridge says of her favorite special effect. "I still watch it and go, 'Oh, that's cool!' But I am wondering, if guys see this, will it be tough for me to get a date?"
The quirky role of the Riddler, a character created by Frank Gorshin in the original TV Batman series, wasn't a stretch for rubber-faced comic Jim Carrey. "This is my Riddler. Mine, mine, mine!" jokes Carrey, 33, insisting that his villain in Batman Forever shticks it to the Caped Crusader in uniquely Carreyesque ways. "Acting goofy was always my entire motivation for living. Other kids would fall down the stairs; I'd fall up the stairs just to get a laugh. I was on manic. I slept in my tap shoes in case my parents needed a laugh during the night. There was a time when people said, 'Jim, if you keep on making faces, your face will freeze like that.' Now they just say, 'Pay him!' "
MARRIED TO MRS. DOUBTFIRE
"Drag queens! I'll play nothing but drag queens!" jokes puckish Broadway star Nathan Lane (Guys and Dolls), the voice of Timon in The Lion King and a cohost of last month's Tony Awards. Lane dons bright plumage in the forthcoming Birds of a Feather, the Mike Nichols-directed remake of La Cage aux Folks. "I play the drag queen, and Robin Williams is my 'husband,' " says Lane, 39. "It's a scary thing, seeing yourself as a woman. I'm naturally glamorous, of course, but put a wig on me and it's heart-stopping! I have one number in a very sexy Grace Jones outfit. In another, Gene Hackman plays a very conservative senator, and when we have him over to dinner, I dress up like the young Barbara Bush." Sighs the less-than-slender Lane: "Unfortunately, that's the outfit I look best in."
Canadian chanteuse Céline Dion, whose latest CD is called The French Album, met Monaco's Prince Albert in May when she was seated next to him at a gala dinner in Monte Carlo celebrating the World Music Awards, at which she performed. "A lot of women would have loved to be at that table. He's one of the most eligible bachelors in the world," says Dion, 27, whose own eligibility ended last December when she married her manager, Rene Angelil. "We had a great time. The prince is very nice, a simple man, very charming. We talked about my family. Mostly he wanted to know about how I grew up. He was amazed that I have 13 brothers and sisters and that we never had any money. He was very interested in that."
