MICKEY MANTLE
Allow Mantle to enjoy hero status for his accomplishments in the game of baseball. He deserves that. But the real heroes in the most important game are his wife and children, who suffered because of his off-field behavior yet stood by his side at his deathbed.

How long and hard did you have to look to find a picture of Mickey Mantle that looked exactly like Det. Mark
Fuhrman?

Krissy Taylor, Jerry Garcia, Mickey Mantle—I realize that having the deceased on your cover is good for business, but wouldn't it make sense to change the name of your publication to Dead People?

SHANNON FAULKNER
Shannon Faulkner was a pioneer who had the courage to stand up to the blatant bias of the Citadel. When she decided to leave due to personal problems, the Citadel was the real loser.
STEPHEN TSAI, Short Hills, N.J.
Ms. Faulkner's 2½-year battle certainly proves she only wanted to get into the Citadel, not be a part of it. Anyone who truly meant to attend would have spent that time getting into shape and proving she was dedicated. She has only shown that $5 million can get you where you feel you have a right to be. Respect and admiration, neither of which she deserves, must be earned.

Let me get this straight. According to Shannon Faulkner's senior company commander, [Alex] Pettett, one joins the Citadel to be trained "for a life of integrity with your wife and with Christ." Yet kicking and harassing another person when she is already down is totally acceptable. Why wasn't he also taught that the ways of the Lord are not confined solely to one's future wife, but encompass the entire human race? Keep your chin up, Shannon, you seem to possess the character, compassion and integrity these guys definitely lack.
MARY LEHMAN, Tequesta, Fla.
So much for Shannon Faulkner's "tremendous inner strength."

OSCEOLA McCARTY
Who says we don't have heroes anymore? Osceola McCarty, you may have lost your chance for a formal education, but you have more—a wise and educated heart.

As a society we are bombarded with images of "beauty," but this woman radiates the true beauty that comes from living an unselfish life.

TOMMY LEE JONES
I am Kimberlea Jones's half sister, and I was alarmed at the amount of misinformation in your story. Interviewing more than one of Tommy Lee's friends would have shown that Kim loved their San Saba ranch. She and Tommy Lee chose it and renovated it together. She is very sad to lose that part of her life. As for staying in San Antonio while he was at the ranch, she has two children with friends and commitments in the city, not to mention the difficulties of traveling with a 3-year-old. She is a dedicated mother and would put her wants aside for her kids. She loves Tommy Lee and never wanted a divorce, but she felt she had no choice. The loss of such a long-standing relationship and the love that comes with it is hard on everyone.

PICKS & PANS
Regarding the couple who are the voices of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, I have no doubt that Russi Taylor met Walt Disney when she was a child, but if it was in 1950 it wasn't at Disneyland, which was opened to the public on July 17, 1955.
