Actor Chazz Palminteri, 44, and his wife, actress Gianna Renaudo, 29, welcomed their first child, Dante Lorenzo (8 lbs., 5 ozs.) on Oct. 10 in New York City. Writer Henry Roth, 89, whose 1934 novel Call It Sleep documented the struggle of immigrants on New York City's Lower East Side, died Oct. 13 in Albuquerque, N. Mex., of undisclosed causes. Though Sleep was an immediate critical success, it didn't become popular until its 1964 reissue in paperback. It has now sold over 1 million copies....
British author Edith Pargeter, 82, who, under the pen name Ellis Peters, wrote the Brother Cadfael series of novels about a crime-solving 12th-century monk, died on Oct. 14 in Madeley, England, of a stroke. Cadfael came to life earlier this year on PBS's Mystery!, with Sir Derek Jacobi in the monk's robe.
Baywatch's Pamela Lee, 28, was rushed to a Santa Monica hospital on Oct. 13 complaining of flulike symptoms. She went home two days later with husband Tommy Lee, 33, of Mötley Crüe. A publicist has since confirmed that the actress, who had a miscarriage in June, is pregnant.
A mugger shoved U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and ran off with her purse on Oct. 15 outside her Baltimore home. Mikulski, 59, hurt her hand while defending herself and was treated at a local hospital. Her purse was recovered—minus $40 and some traveler's checks. The police have no suspects....
O.J. Simpson defense lawyer Barry Scheck, 45, was stopped by New York City police on Oct. 12 for making an illegal U-turn and was issued summonses for driving with an expired license and without proper car registration. Scheck pleaded no contest to the U-turn and renewed his license that day. He may contest the registration charge.
On Oct. 10, model Christie Brinkley, 42, filed for sole custody of her son, Jack, 4 months. Jack's dad is Brinkley's estranged third husband, real estate developer Rick Taubman, 46. Brinkley and Taubman wed last December and separated seven months later....
On Oct. 17 in London, accountant Keith Moore, 51, was sentenced to six years in jail for stealing more than $9 million from rocker Sting (born Gordon Sumner), 43. Moore took the cash during his 15 years as Sting's money manager.
Actor Ralph Fiennes, 32, and British actress Alex Kingston, 31, have split after two years of marriage. They are "leading separate lives," said his publicist, who won't say whether the couple plan to divorce.
Actor Johnny Depp, 32, recently paid $2.3 million for the Los Angeles home that once belonged to creep-meister Bela Lugosi, who died in 1956. "The Castle" had been owned by Hollywood palimony lawyer Marvin Mitchelson since 1980. Last year Depp played Lugosi's friend, C-movie director Ed Wood, in the film bearing Wood's name.
