Former tennis umpire Frank Hammond, 66, died of Lou Gehrig's disease in New York City on Nov. 23. Believed to be the sport's first full-time professional umpire, Hammond, who retired in the late '80s, was widely considered to be the most reliable court official in tennis.
After 19 months of marriage, actor Jason Hervey, 23 (Wayne of The Wonder Years), and his wife, socialite Kelley Patricia O'Neill, 28, filed for divorce on Nov. 13 in Los Angeles superior court....
Silky-voiced singer Natalie Cole, 45, and her husband, music producer Andre Fischer, age unavailable, filed for divorce for the second time (they withdrew an earlier petition that was filed in 1992) in L.A. superior court on Nov. 21....
Crystal King, age unavailable, filed for separation from her husband, police-beating victim Rodney King, 30, in L.A. superior court on Nov. 27. On Nov. 27, a Philadelphia court ordered the Philadelphia Phillies to pay retired bus driver Carl Seidel, 72, $128,000 in compensatory damages for a back injury he suffered when the team's mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, hugged him and knocked him down at a 1991 event.
Rosemary West, 41, was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 22 by a jury in Winchester, England. She was found guilty of taking part in torturing and killing 10 women, including her 16-year-old daughter. West's husband, Frederick, 53, who confessed to the crimes last year, hanged himself in his cell on New Year's Day....
Tammy Faye Bakker's husband, church builder Roe Messner, 60, was convicted of bankruptcy fraud on Nov. 22 by a federal jury in Wichita, Kans. Messner was found guilty on three counts of making false statements and two counts of hiding assets. He will face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced next February.
Retired tennis star Chris Evert, 40, and her husband, onetime Olympic skier Andy Mill, 42, announced on Nov. 20 that a third child will join sons Alexander, 4, and Nicholas, 18 months, in June....

On the financial front, Clancy and his wife say that they were bilked out of $1.6 million by former friend Richard Scott, 50, whom the state of Maryland charged on Nov. 10 with fraud and securities violations.
Former White House press secretary James Brady, 55, suffered a heart attack on Nov. 28 in Fairfax, Va., after he was placed under anesthesia for oral surgery. Brady, who was partially paralyzed in 1981 by a bullet intended for President Ronald Reagan, now promotes gun-control legislation with his wife, Sarah, 53. He was listed in fair condition at a Virginia hospital.
Ice skater Tonya Harding, 25, will wed Portland, Ore., machinist Michael Smith, 29, this winter. The disgraced Olympian's first marriage, to Jeff Gillooly, 28, ended the year before the 1994 attack on her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan.
