Do You Take This Woman? And Do You Take This Man? Did They Ever! The Past 12 Months Has Been a Star-Studded Altar-cation
February 3, '94
Action hero Van Damme, 32, may have pulled off his most fantastic feat yet: a surprise Bangkok wedding for his live-in love. While scouting movie locales in Asia, he jumped the gun on a planned L.A. ceremony. Displays of affection were taboo at the temple where a Buddhist monk wed the pair (here flanked by matron of honor Tamara Mannelin and best man Moshe Diamant), but once out the door, LaPier, 28, showed her groom he'd done things right. "We kissed," she says, "like crazy."
DEBORAH KOONS & JERRY GARCIA
February 14, '94
Tie died, at least for the day, when the Grateful Dead lead guitarist 51, donned a suit (sans cravat—not even one from his own clothing line) to please his 40ish filmmaker bride. Six-foot-high red canvas hearts hung from the ceiling of the yacht club in Tiburon, Calif., on Valentine's Day, and the 250 guests partied hearty, but it was lights out by 11 p.m. Well, hey—this is the '90s.
SYDNEY BIDDLE BARROWS & DARNAY HOFFMAN
May 14, '94
A blue-blood with a scarlet past, the former Mayflower Madam, 42, wed TV producer Hoffman, 46, at New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The bride wore pale pink. Said she: "With my age and my history, wearing white would have been ludicrous."
KATHERINE GERSHMAN & TED KENNEDY JR.
October 10, '93
The clouds on Block Island, R.I., parted in time for the law student, 32, to wed psychiatrist Gershman, 34. At the reception, the besotted groom sang "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)." "Beautiful voice," declared a band member, "but he shouldn't quit his job."
JILL GOODACRE & HARRY CONNICK JR.
April 16, '94
Crooner Connick, 26, took the Love and Marriage/Horse and Carriage lyric literally when he whisked model Goodacre, 30, off to a fairy-tale wedding reception for 300 in New Orleans' Gallier Hall. "Harry's so sentimental," reports guest Carol Burnett. "He cried."
DONNA RICE & JACK HUGHES
May 7, '94
When Rice, 36, who now works for a nonprofit organization, married Jack Hughes, 42, a corporate vice president, guests were invited to "A Big Chill Weekend in Gone with the Wind, Big Easy Style." Held at a wisteria-draped Mississippi mansion, the wedding went perfectly—until a mid-ceremony thunderstorm forced everyone indoors. But Rice offered no excuses. "We lit candles," she says. "It was very romantic."
DENI HINES & KIRK PENGILLY
December 30, '93
Singer Hines, 22, wasn't sure the heartthrob INXS guitarist, 35, was the marrying kind until he slid a 31-diamond ring on her finger. The couple (here with friends) threw a helluva rock-and-roll wedding in Sydney, complete with secret phone numbers to call for date and location. But even as they stood at the altar, Hines wasn't taking any chances. She promised, she said afterward, "to honor and trust—or I'll kick your butt."
KELLEY PATRICIA O'NEILL & JASON ROBERT HERVEY
March 26, '94
The florist sent O'Neill, 27, the wrong flowers. Hervey, 22 (Wayne of The Wonder Years), spiked a fever. But the couple kept smiling. One of their self-styled vows, after all, was "Never go to bed angry."
MARLA MAPLES & DONALD TRUMP
December 20, '93
"When I stepped up to the altar, Donald kissed me," says actress Maples, 30. "The minister said, 'Not yet, Donald!' " Perhaps the tycoon, 47, was tired of waiting. When they wed at Trump's Plaza Hotel (late, because Maples had to breastfeed), baby Tiffany was 2 months old. He donned his first wedding ring; she vowed to "love, honor and cherish." It was a triumph—or would that be a tri-ump?
JILL WHELAN & BRAD ST. JOHN
December 31, '93
A three-week courtship persuaded Jill Whelan (the captain's daughter on Love Boat) to anchor her future to importer St. John, 33. In a small ceremony on—yes—a boat at Lake Arrowhead, Calif., Whelan, 27, took her mate and his name (becoming another Jill St. John). In April, with Whelan in Vera Wang (left), they repeated their vows.
ELKE SOMMER & WOLF WALTHER
August 29, '93
When the actress, 52, wed hotel manager Walther, 46, in her native Bavarian town of Erlangen, she wore silk and lace—but the refinement ended there. In keeping with village tradition, Sommer arrived at the church on a hay cart, and later, in a ritual meant to symbolize shared work, the couple sawed a log in half.
MOLLY MARTIN & ROGER CLINTON
March 26, '94
The President's brother, 37, was clearly smitten with the 8-months-pregnant Martin, 25, when they wed in Dallas. "He's going to grow from this," said a friend, "or he's going to fall apart."
SARA KAPFER & CUBA GOODING JR.
March 13, '94
No Lightning Jack, Gooding, 26, waited seven years before marrying his teacher's-aide girlfriend, 24, in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He was quick about the honeymoon, though: It lasted one day.
SHARON WIX & WILLIAM SANDERSON
December 5, '93
Luckily, Sanderson, 47, was Larry, the talking third of Newhart's Larry, Darryl and Darryl. So when it came time to say "I do" to Wix, 39, a former banquet manager, he was up to the task. The two Darryls were at the Las Vegas ceremony, and afterward the gang donned rose-colored glasses "because that's how I'm seeing the world," said Sanderson. "I'm so happy."
ALLISON ARNGRIM & ROBERT SCHOONOVER
November 6, '93
"In my last wedding we did the dress, the bridesmaids—gag," says Arngrim, 32 (Nellie on Little House on the Prairie). She and Schoonover, 44, her colleague at an AIDS hot line, wed in L.A., sporting tuxedos and black toenails. A political statement, perhaps? Says Arngrim: "We both just really like black."
MELINDA FRENCH & BILL GATES
January 1, '94
When Microsoft founder Bill Gates, 38, gave up his status as the richest bachelor in the U.S. to wed a 29-year-old manager at his company, he did it in mogul style: on the 17th hole of a golf course overlooking the Pacific on the exclusive Hawaiian island of Lanai. This, after a pre-wedding show by Willie Nelson and a spectacular fireworks display. The final tab: $1 million.
KELLY PRESTON & LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS
April 24, '94
His L.A. wedding to model Preston, 26, was like the perfect movie, says the 32-year-old actor. "It had its emotional moments, its comic relief moments, its moments of beauty." And at least one moment of tension. Lou confused his ring size with, his hat size, so "the ring didn't fit," says Phillips. "I had to use my best man's."
LORRAINE BRACCO & EDWARD JAMES OLMOS
January 28, '94
They married in the shadow of a bitter custody dispute, but actors Bracco, 39, and Olmos, 46, didn't let it ruin their day. All six children (Olmos's four sons and Bracco's two daughters, one from her marriage to actor Harvey Keitel) were in attendance. "The kids begged us to get married," said Bracco. Olmos was glad they did. When he saw his bride walking down the aisle at Manhattan's St. Regis Hotel, his joy rendered him speechless. "I was stunned," he said, "by her womanness."
PAULA MURAD & JAMES COBURN
October 22, '93
Tough guys do eat tiramisu: That confection filled the wedding cake that the 65-year-old actor served to 50 friends at a Paris bistro. Coburn can talk sweet too. "Paula looked gorgeous," he says of his bride, 37, adding that the mayor of Versailles, who wed the two, "said she was the most beautiful lady with the most beautiful hat he had ever seen."
MARLEE MATLIN & KEVIN GRANDALSKI
August 29, '93
When the Oscar-winning, hearing-impaired actress wed an L.A. cop at the home of Fonzie-turned-director-producer Henry Winkler, Hollywood touches abounded: There were 15 parking valets, dozens of bodyguards and a dance platform over the swimming pool. But not everything was by the book. Bride and groom, both 28, said their vows in sign language, and beneath their black tuxes, Kevin and his groomsmen flaunted hot-pink socks.
BARBARA WILLIAMS & TOM HAYDEN
August 8, '93
Forget just love, honor and obey. The 54-year-old California state senator and the 40-year-old actress, who married on Vancouver Island, Canada, vowed to commit themselves to the preservation of old-growth forests. And they'd best not renege, since, says Jane Fonda's ex, they wed "in the presence of whales and eagles, who were witnesses."
KATHLEEN McCRONE & WAYNE NEWTON
April 9, '94
He calls her a keeper, she calls him an incredibly nice, down-to-earth person. They're putting down roots—but right after the 52-year-old crooner pledged himself to the 30-year-old lawyer at Newton's 52-acre Las Vegas ranch, the pair went up, up and away in a pink helicopter.
TAMMY FAYE BAKKER & ROE MESSNER
October 3, '93
When Tammy Faye, 52, stood beside her ex-husband's onetime business associate clutching a bouquet of latex magnolias, the 100°F temperature was hot enough to melt her mascara. And while nobody danced at the Rancho Mirage, Calif., wedding, Bakker did sing in public for the first time in years, a milestone she credits to her 58-year-old groom. "I couldn't sing," she confessed to the 50 guests, "until Roe told me he loved me."
SERENA STANHOPE & VISCOUNT LINLEY
October 8, '93
Queen Elizabeth was beaming as her 32-year-old nephew met up with his bride at St. Margaret's, Westminster. And why not? Serena, 24, is a beautiful blue-blood with no penchant—yet—for troublemaking. Better still, she seems to share her royal aunt's frugality. At a post-reception supper, Elton John and some 150 other guests were asked to kick in $50 apiece.
MARY MATALIN & JAMES CARVILLE
November 26 '93
They hurled inventive invective at each other during the 1992 presidential election. But when it was over, Bush political director (she) and Clinton strategist (he) resorted to romantic cliché. "It was just meant to be," said Matalin, 40, announcing her engagement to Carville, 49. The couple kept mum about their New Orleans ceremony, but Clinton adviser George Stephanopoulos pronounced it "giggly."
ROSANNA ARQUETTE & JOHN SIDEL
Arquette kept the date and place of her wedding to her third husband, L.A. restaurateur Sidei, 32, well under wraps. And though no photos were made public, the 34-year-old actress's off-white Pamela Barish gown reportedly didn't hide a thing. Said one attendee at the very private L.A. ceremony: "All the guests were saying it was the sexiest wedding dress they'd ever seen."
TERI GARR & JOHN O'NEIL
November 27, '93
They had tried to do it in Aspen and tried again in Paris, but legalities or work had interfered. Finally, the 44-year-old actress and the 42-year-old building contractor made it to the altar at the Twin Dolphins Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. "Four hotel waiters stood up for us," says Garr, "and a little girl I'd met at the pool was the bridesmaid. It was very sweet."
LEILA KENZEL & NEIL MONACO
April 26, '94
Kenzel was hungry and cranky the day Monaco, a 34-year-old acting coach, dragged her up a mountain at sunset. "When he finally asked me to marry him, at the top," says the actress, 33 (she's Fran on the sitcom Mad About You), "I said Yes,' thinking 'Good, now we can have dinner.' " The pair celebrated their nuptials at a Burbank, Calif., bowling alley—where, luckily, the candy machines were never more than a few paces away.
MARISSA YOUNG & MATT RICHARDSON
April 16, '94
"I always wanted a big wedding," says Young, 24, a dancer with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. She got her wish when she and Richardson, 21, a clown, married before 6,600 during a performance in Charleston, W.Va. And you thought your wedding was a circus.
DEE DEE HEMBY & DAN CORTESE
May 21, '94
He's famous for shouting "I love this place" in Burger King commercials, but when the 26-year-old former host of MTV Sports wed actress Hemby, 26, in Wilmington, N.C., decorum ruled. Assuming, that is, that Cortese is kidding when he reports: "The groomsmen wore full-length coral taffeta dresses."
GERALDINE OLIVER & DR. WILLIAM MASTERS
August 14, '93
Sex was such compelling business, it seems, that he had to put true love on hold for 50 years. But after two marriages (including a 21-year hitch to coresearcher Virginia Johnson), the renowned sex researcher, 78, wed his former college sweetheart, 76, in Lake Placid, N.Y. Apparently, though, he needed a refresher course in his specialty. After he planted a chaste peck on his bride's lips, the minister scolded, "Bill, you can do better than that."
ANETTE QVIBERG & DOLPH LUNDGREN
February 26, '94
They met in New York City, got engaged in Bora-Bora, wed in Stockholm (where the 20ish Qviberg lived), honeymooned in Paris, Morocco, Marbella. "She makes my life complete," said the actor, 34. His world too.
JOAN CHILD & RODNEY DANGERFIELD
December 26, '93
Dangerfield, 72, and florist Child, 41, were wed in Las Vegas after a 24-hour engagement—and 10 years of dating. Child didn't promise to "obey," but it's clear the groom is getting plenty of the R word. Says his bride: "I think Rodney is ageless."
NANCY SHEPPARD & JOE PANTOLIANO
February 18, '94
When actor Pantoliano (Baby's Day Out), 41 wed model Nancy Sheppard, 31, in L.A., it was a family affair: His 13-year-old was the best man; her 8-year-old the maid of honor; their 2-year-old the flower girl. Each guest got a photo of the duo posing coyly in bed. "We wanted a sense of humor," says the groom, "because marriage is serious."
ASSIRIA LEMOS & PELE
April 30, '94
Soccer great Pelé, 53, and psychologist Lemos, 36, kicked off their marriage (the second for each) with a Brazilian bash: There were 300 guests, 100 pounds of lobster, a 24-piece orchestra. A crowd of well-wishers asked for autographs. When it started to rain, the wedding cake had to be rushed under cover, but Pelé didn't even try to hide his tears of joy.
SUSAN BROWN & RICHARD MOLL
July 24, '93
When Night Court's Bull, 50, wed designer Brown, 32, in L.A., he got Milton Berle for a father-in-law ("Oh, you beautiful Moll," quipped the comic). But with Brown in a bias-cut gown, gardenias scenting the air and a primo jazz combo, it was clearly a romantic comedy.
WALLIS FRANKEN & CLAUDE MONTANA
July 25, '93
How many grooms show up for the fitting? But of course the outré designer was there when ex-model Franken, his muse for 20 years, got the finishing touches on her going-away outfit (pictured). She wore another pair of loose white pants, topped with a cropped jacket, to the Paris civil ceremony. After the vows, the couple, both 44, nibbled on caviar with the likes of Yves St. Laurent.
BETH LIEBLING & EDDIE VEDDER
June 3, '94
They capped off their 10-year courtship with a Roman holiday: Pearl Jam's Vedder, 29, and Liebiing, 27 (here with friends), pledged eternal love in the Eternal City. He ditched the grunge for a suit; she wore lace. After the city hall ceremony, they supped and said they'd be back next year for their anniversary. Ah, amore!
TRISHA YEARWOOD & ROBERT REYNOLDS
May 21, '94
Country diva Yearwood, 29, wore the pants (an ensemble by Richard Tyler) when she wed the Mavericks' bass player, Reynolds, 32, in Nashville. For the bluegrass reception, guests sported jeans. "Weddings can be real stuffy, and at the reception you don't feel like you can take your shoes off," says Yearwood. "But ours was fun."
KELLY DURST & DANIEL ROEBUCK
May 7, '94
Life is a carousel for Roebuck (Matlock's Cliff Lewis), 30, and former bookkeeper Durst, 24. They got engaged in a helicopter, trolleyed their 320 guests to a reception at an Easton, Pa., amusement park and, after a short trip to New Orleans, plan a longer honeymoon this winter in—where else?—Disney World.
MARTA FITZGERALD & RUSH LIMBAUGH
May 27, '94
Limbaugh, 43, found his female through E-mail: He and freelance journalist Marta Fitzgerald, 35, met via a computer bulletin board. They married at the Virginia home of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in a ceremony that, at the groom's request, took only a few minutes. But Limbaugh waxed romantic, in his fashion. "I've said I loved myself too much to love anybody else," said the talk host, "but that's no longer operative."
KAREN AKERS & KEVIN POWER
September 16, '93
It's no surprise that chanteuse Akers, 48, sang at her Manhattan ceremony ("Cent Mille Chansons," the first song she had sung for businessman Power, 41). But how many brides teach themselves calligraphy? Akers addressed all 90 invitations herself. Says she: "It calmed me."
BARBARA FELTUS & BORIS BECKER
December 17, '93
The 26-year-old court ace and his 27-year-old actress bride, both in black, clinched their love match in Leimen, Germany, just weeks before the birth of their son Noah.
SHANNON HILE & RICHARD EDEN
September 5, '93
TV's Robocop, 36, went low-tech to wed actress Hile, 30, in her family's Culver City, Calif., backyard. "It was like a picnic," says Eden. And when the bouquet didn't show, "Shannon used dried flowers from off the toilet."
ELIZABETH FINKELSTEIN & BRANDON CRUZ
June 26, '94
Bill Bixby didn't live to see his Courtship of Eddie's Father son, now 32 and a musician, marry actress Finkelstein, 26 (who fell for Cruz after seeing him on Geraldo). But on that steamy day in Malibu, says Cruz, Bixby "was there. I could just feel him."
