In the movies, the 34-year-old bedeviling Brit has put up with his share of uncomfortable costumes. As Chopin in Impromptu, he layered ruffled shirts under tight jackets; in Sirens, Grant played a stiff-collared reverend; in Four Weddings and a Funeral, he was required to dress formally. So it's no wonder that in private life, Grant opts for a languorous, casual look. "I think he loves to downplay his appeal," says impromptu screenwriter Sarah Kernochan. But relaxed in Grant's case doesn't mean schlumpy. On the contrary, in an unremarkable white shirt (top button open) and black cashmere jacket, he looks positively spiffy. Which is a lucky thing, if you believe the self-deprecating story he tells: Grant claims that he offered to do a nude scene in Sirens. However, after he started to disrobe, his offer was refused. "Perhaps," he was told, "we'll do it in clothes after all."
