But everywhere you turned, it seemed, people were buzzing about actor Mickey Rourke, who was in town and rumored to be stalking his estranged wife, model Carre Otis. Rourke, 42, who was arrested last July for assaulting Otis, was not invited to the five shows in which she was working—though he said he was attending other shows to do homework for his upcoming role in a film about an AIDS-stricken fashion designer.
Rourke did little to improve his bad-boy rep. By midweek, Donald Trump's Plaza Hotel reportedly found that the actor's $5,000-a-night suite had been substantially damaged. (Rourke's lawyer denies the report.) Then, 16-year-old supermodel Bridget Hall—pictured earlier in the week kissing Rourke on the cheek—put an end to reports that the two were dating. "I'm just not impressed by him," she told a reporter. Finally, in the week's strangest twist, Rourke and Otis, after not speaking for six months, were spotted at a Manhattan nightclub briefly clasping hands and chatting like, well, two people who'd never been married.
Meanwhile, back on the runways, there were plenty of glam getups on display. Richard Tyler wowed the crowd with golden alligator hot pants and white tuxedos for women; Donna Karan showed off her tailored Dietrich-style suits; and Mizrahi made his fashion statement with lace poodle skirts. In the end the forecast for spring called for plenty of pink, floral prints and anything remotely retro, from '40s-style, bias-cut dresses to disco-era, sequined tube tops. First-timer Molly Ringwald was duly impressed by the six-day do. "It was really a spectacle," she declared. "Going to a fashion show is something every girl should do once in her lifetime."
