LESSER MEN MIGHT HAVE CRACKED AT THE prospect of following in the cleats of beloved quarterback Joe Montana. Yet last January, rock-jawed, steel-ribbed Steve Young carved out his own chunk of history by leading the San Francisco 49ers to an unprecedented fifth Super Bowl victory. Arm strength, rugged looks and a law degree aren't the only things that set Young apart, though. "I'm the Eighth Wonder of the World: a 32-year-old single Mormon," says the 6'1", 210-lb. great-great-great-grandson of church founder Brigham Young.

Single but not completely free. His girlfriend, Brigham Young University grad student Stephanie Weston, 23, rhapsodizes about his 'blue eyes and bone structure." And she likes her man in uniform. "That way," she says, "I can see his butt better." She's not the only one watching his passes. He regularly receives proposals in the mail.

Slowly he is getting used to all the attention. "Even today I'm sometimes shy," he says, "but being cheered by 80,000 people helps bring you out of yourshell." In keeping with his faith, Young doesn't drink or smoke—and he drives a Dodge pickup. When he wants to look spiffy, he says, "I clean up good." But he prefers a grubbier state. "Work up a good sweat every day," Young says, "and you'll get the very best out of your looks."
