Allison Atlas, 24, whose four-year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare form of leukemia, sparked a nationwide campaign to find a matching bone-marrow donor, died of complications of the disease on Aug. 30 at a hospital in Bethesda, Md. The campaign, though it failed to save Atlas, added more than 70,000 potential donors to the National Marrow Donor Program....
Hairdresser Robin Weir, 45, who made his name during the Reagan Administration with his twice-a-week visits to the White House to do Nancy Reagan's do, died of colitis, bacteria sepsis and a heart attack on Sept. 3 at a Washington hospital....
Victoria's Secret founder Roy Raymond, 47, who sold sexy lingerie to women at his specially stores and through a catalog, was found dead in San Francisco Bay on Aug. 26, an apparent suicide. (He was seen walking toward the Golden Gate Bridge earlier in the day.) Raymond started the business in 1977 but sold it five years later for about $1 million. (It now has annual sales of more than $500 million.) His subsequent business venture, an upscale children's store, went bankrupt.
Rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg, 21, was charged with first-degree murder as an accomplice in the Aug. 25 shooting of Philip Woldemarian, 22, in Los Angeles. Woldemarian was allegedly shot by Dogg's bodyguard, McKinley Lee, 24, who was charged with first-degree murder. Dogg's attorney, who is also representing Lee, maintains that Lee was acting in self-defense after Woldemarian pulled a gun on the singer. Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, has been released on a $1 million bond and is scheduled to be arraigned around Oct. 1.
Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (1984's Amadeus), 53, was released from a hospital in Wenatchee, Wash., on Sept. 5 following a car accident two days earlier. Abraham broke his left hand and several ribs and had 18 stitches in his mouth. The other driver, Guy Eugene Ketzenberg, 28, who had run a stop sign, was killed.
Eight isn't enough for Olympic decathlon champ Bruce Jenner, 43, and his third wife, Kris, 34, a businesswoman. The two, with eight children between them from previous marriages, are expecting in April.
Actress Rene Russo, 39, Clint Eastwood's In the Line of Fire costar, and her screenwriter husband, Dan Gilroy, 34, had their first baby, a daughter, Rose, on Aug. 28 in Los Angeles.
