Guess? jeans model land 1992 Playboy Playmate of the Year Anna Nicole Smith. 26, was sued for breach of contract on Dec. 2 in New York State supreme court by her ex-publicist David Granoff, who claims she owes him $17, 143.13. He says she walked out on her one-year contract with him after only five months. Smith's representatives had no comment....

Ex-airman Gary Lee Higgins, 32, was arrested on Nov. 22 for unlawful possession of a handgun in Bernardsville, N.J., near the home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, 64. Higgins, who was armed with a .44-caliber pistol, claimed he was trying to deliver a 100-page science-fiction manuscript to Onassis, now an editor at Doubleday. At the time of the incident, Onassis was at her apartment in New York City. Higgins remains in the Somerset County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Lewis Thomas, 80, noted biologist, physician, medical administrator and author, died of a rare cancer that undermines the lymph system, on Dec. 3 in a New York City hospital. Thomas's best-selling works included The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher (1974), which won the National Book Award, and The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of a Biology Watcher (1979), an American Book Award winner....

Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, 44, billionaire king of the MedellĂ­n cocaine cartel, was killed in a shootout with Colombian security forces on Dec. 2 in his home city. Escobar, who escaped from prison in July 1992, had an $8.7 million price-on his head....

Watergate burglar Prank Sturgis, 68, died of lung and kidney cancer on Dec. 4 in a Miami hospital. Sturgis served 13 months of a one-to four-year sentence for his part in the 1972 break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. Until his death, Sturgis claimed he was acting under orders from President Nixon's White House....

Douglas Hopkins, 32, former lead guitarist of the rock group Gin Blossoms, was found shot to death in an apparent suicide in his house in Tempe, Ariz., on Dec. 5. Hopkins, who wrote the group's hit singles "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You," was fired last year for his drinking.

Actor-singer Robert Goulet, 60, is recovering at his Las Vegas home after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer on Dec. 7. His illness was diagnosed in August 1992. Goulet plans to resume his stage role as King Arthur in Camelot on Dec. 28 in Los Angeles....

Professional golfer Paul Azinger, 33, is fighting lymphoma, a form of cancer. He won three major tournaments this year, including the prestigious PCA Championship, and will undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment in his right shoulder blade, where the cancer is located. Although he will not be able to play for several months, Azinger, whose 1993 earnings surpassed $1.4 million, is expected to make a full recovery.

Actress Teri Garr, 44, I wed John O'Neil, 42, a building contractor, on Nov. 27 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They met three years ago through Garr's publicist. It is the first marriage for Garr and the second for O'Neil.
