FOR SHOWBIZ-GOSSIP ADDICTS, THE CAROUSEL OF HOPE BENEFIT AT L.A.'s Beverly Hilton was one of the juiciest evenings in recent memory. A somber Jay Leno appeared with former Tonight Show producer Helen Kushnick, who had been deposed two weeks earlier. Dream-guy Michael Bolton was spotted with Nicollette Sheridan (Harry Hamlin's soon-to-be ex). A slimmed-down Rachel Hunter (who gave birth to daughter Renee in June) showed up with scenically eroded hub Rod Stewart, and pregnant Nastassja Kinski held hands with companion Quincy Jones. Sly Stallone turned up in a tux and a George Hamilton Ian, while Patty Hearst wore something mint green and matronly. "Amazing," said Dan Aykroyd. "From the Symbionese Liberation Army to [Beverly Hills]....I think among all the people here, I'd want to meet her the most."

Thrown by businessman Marvin Davis and wife Barbara, who founded the biannual benefit in 1978, the Oct. 3 gala (which commanded $10,000 and up per table) raised $5 million for the Children's Diabetes Foundation and related charities. (The Davises' 22-year-old daughter, Dana, is diabetic.) While trumpeters, roving mimes and a 20-piece violin orchestra provided predinner entertainment, high rollers assembled for a silent auction that included a trip to St.-Tropez, jewels from Cartier and even a "Lunch with Luke" (Perry). The hosts' grandson. Alexander, 10, was rumored to have bid $250 for a date with model Claudia Schiffer. At last report, he planned to spirit her off to the trendy Mirage Hotel for a romantic evening of Nintendo.
