Goldie Hawn, who for the past decade has produced many of her own films, now has sent word around the movie community that she wants to direct. Her business partner, Anthea Sylbert, confirms that while no directing project has been set, Hawn "certainly intends to direct. We're just not sure when."
Sylbert says Hawn's priority at the moment "remains her family [longtime companion Kurt Russell, their son, Wyatt, 5, and Kale, 13, and Oliver, 15, Goldie's kids from an earlier marriage], and when you're directing, you have to put everybody else, including family, on hold. But it will happen."
SIGN OF THE TIMES
Attention, autograph hounds: You've seen Ed Ames throw that well aimed hatchet in repeats of his now infamous 1965 appearance on The Tonight Show. But how much would you pay to have Ames's autograph along with his address, in a Tonight Show guest book?
Ames's signature is but one of more than 400 included in three Tonight Show guest books, dating from Sept. 4, 1963, to March 29, 1965, which will be auctioned off this Thursday (June 11) in Manhattan by collector Herman Darvick. Bids start at $10,000 for the set.
Darvick, an autograph expert, says the books "sat backstage in the Green Room and were signed by guests while they waited to go on." He says he obtained the books from the son of a former Tonight Show unit manager who found them while cleaning out a closet in 1967.
An NBC spokesperson says the three books are Johnny Carson's personal property, and have been "missing for years," adding, "Mr. Carson has asked for their return, to no avail."
The three books include the John Hancocks of Joan Rivers, Paul Newman and Woody Allen.
NETWORK HIT LIST
Now that the networks have unveiled their fall schedules, here's our list of previously touted pilots that didn't get picked up for the new season:
CBS let go of the sitcom Letting Go, which was to have been a vehicle for Judith Light (Who's the Boss) as a romance writer and divorced mother of two. CBS also jettisoned 1775, a sitcom starring Ryan O'Neal as a Philadelphia innkeeper with a family at the dawn of the American Revolution. Fox said no to the sitcom Mom, starring Loni Anderson as a much married fortune hunter, and ABC did likewise to Rio Shannon, a one-hour drama that would have starred Blair Brown (Molly Dodd) as a widowed mother operating a New Mexico dude ranch.
And if you were hoping for the return of Shelley Long (Cheers) as a marriage counselor in the half-hour sitcom Good Advice, you'll have a little longer to wait. CBS ordered the show only as a backup for possible mid-season replacement. Other mid-season candidates: Dudley Moore's sitcom Dudley, on CBS; the Dan Aykroyd police sitcom, C.C.P.D., on Fox; and The Jackie Thomas Show, starring Roseanne's husband, Tom Arnold, as an insufferable TV talk show host, on ABC.
