While the baseball flick's lead Babe—Geena Davis—was a no-show, costar Madonna arrived in appropriate starlike fashion—by limo but clad in denim cutoffs, platform shoes and a black jacket. A cut higher on the dress-code chain: director Penny Marshall, sporting a black pantsuit and black sequined sneakers. Marshall wasted few words after accepting Most Valuable Player Award from New York Women in Film, which cosponsored the premiere and after-party. Said Marshall: "Thank you very much. I want the movie to start."
After the screening, guests including Robert DeNiro, Charles Grodin, James Brooks and Lauren Hutton adjourned to a tent outside Tavern on the Green in New York City's Central Park for music from an all-woman jazz band, ribs, steaks and baseball-shaped cakes. Asked about the film, designer Nicole Miller said simply, "I went for the men," meaning leads Tom Hanks and Jon Lovitz (whose greaseball-agent role scored biggest). Allowed new heartthrob Lovitz: "The part was written for me. I'm naturally sleazy...but not an agent."
