KNOCKING OPPORTUNITY
"There's nothing I can tell anyone in this room about [making] a film, because they already know how to do that," Lily Tomlin told Barbra Streisand, Maya Angelou, Diahann Carroll and the rest of the Hollywood power gals assembled at last month's Crystal Awards luncheon, sponsored by the Women in Film group, in Beverly Hills. Instead, Tomlin, 52, offered this bit of reassuring advice to the jittery A listers: "Don't be afraid of missing opportunities. Behind every failure is an opportunity somebody wishes they had missed."

HOW TO GET A HEAD IN TV
Now that he has been on the air for a year as the host of his own syndicated talk show, Montel Williams says his glossy pate has reflected some unexpected glare. "For the first seven months, articles would not identify me as the black talk-show host, but the bald-headed host," explains Williams, 36. "People initially thought my look was something that I did just for this job." Actually, his easy-maintenance anticoif dates back to 1984. "I had a premature balding look, so I just decided to get rid of the rest of it. I shave it once a day, in the morning. If I go out in the evening, I'll shave it twice. When I have a five o'clock shadow, it's like an eclipse."

NOW FOR THE MINISERIES: THE DI IS CAST, AND THE CHARLES IS TOO
Close your eyes and think of England. Everyone else is, especially at NBC, where the rush is on to cast its 1993 TV miniseries based on Andrew Morton's runaway best-seller, Diana: Her True Story. Author Morton, perhaps exercising his droit d'auteur, has said he likes Jessica Lange in the title role for her "fawnlike capability." Not a bad choice, but doesn't Wayne Gretzky look a lot more like her? We respectfully offer this (among other sensible solutions, pictured here) before the whole casting business gets out of hand. But one last suggestion: Vice President Dan Quayle as bonny Prince William?
