STEVEN BAUER WISES UP
Now that former Wiseguy star KEN WAHL has left the CBS series for good, does his successor to the show, STEVEN BALER, feel uneasy about stepping into a series previously built around someone else? "I don't really think about that," says Bauer, 33, who'll play Michael Santana in the season opener Nov. 10. "This is a show that didn't hold the loyalty or attention of its fans. I was offered a brand-new situation. This show has got a new life now." One of the job's possible drawbacks, adds Bauer, is that it might cut into the time he can spend with ALEXANDER, 5, his son with actress MELANIE GRIFFITH (DON JOHNSON'S current spouse). Asked if he's worried about how Alexander will deal with the my-two-dads syndrome, Bauer says, "Don and I have a very good relationship. He made it clear to me early on by telling me, 'Please know that I'll always be there for Alexander, but I will always make sure he knows who his dad is.' "

JANE FONDA PEDALS HER PRODUCT
"Most of the people I spend time with eventually change their life-style to a more healthy one," says JANE FONDA, 52, whose newest exercise video is titled Jane Fonda's Lean Routine. "Not because I nudge them, "she says, "but because I set an example and practice what I preach." Does that include her current beau, TED TURNER, and have his habits changed? "Definitely. Everyone changes their exercise habits when they know me. He goes biking a lot now. Biking is my all-time favorite sport. "And does Jane need any body work? "I think I'm perfect," jokes Fonda. "I don't know. The areas that I need help on are not negotiable. They have to do with gravity."

THIS LUCIE WON'T PLAY BALL
"I had my own reasons for not liking the way this project came about," says LUCIE ARNAZ, 39, about the forthcoming CBS made-for-television film just shot about her parents, LUCILLE BALL and DESI ARNAZ. "But it has nothing to do with not wanting a project done in general. Of course somebody should tell their story—they're famous people, and it should definitely be told. I was going to do it myself. The plan was that we'd all do it together, CBS and the family. But then [executive producer] LARRY THOMPSON apparently talked someone into deciding otherwise. So I read in the paper that Lucie is not too happy with the project because she thinks it's going to take 'the glow off the family legend.' That is clearly not the reason. I would sell my firstborn to take the glow off the family legend from time to time. You don't need your family to glow."

GREGG ALLMAN ACTS UP
Rocker GREGG ALLMAN, 42, makes his acting debut this month in, of all things, an episode of the syndicated TV show Superboy. "Acting is something I've been thinking about for quite some time. I just wanted to see what it tastes like. I'm not sure if I have any future as an actor. But if I do, I think I'll go for it." Does he think he'll ever win an Oscar? "I'll have to win a Grammy first," he says. "It bothers me that I haven't. It often doesn't have anything to do with the music itself, and that's the baffling, tick-off part of it. God, yes, man, I'd like one. A gold record is nice, but a Grammy is 10 times nicer. But I feel sure there'll be a day when I see one."
