Stylish Brits were baffled by the inclusion of Princess Margaret's daughter, Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, 26, on fashion arbiter Eleanor Lambert's annual Best Dressed List. Art student Sarah dresses in a style described by one editor as "a '90s Annie Hall." No such seams were split over the elevation of Japan's Empress Michiko, 56, to Lambert's Hall of Fame. "The Empress," says her designer, "is not a slave to fashion."
BEST FRIEND OR FIEND?
It's a dog-eat-owner world. Just ask Queen Elizabeth II. On March 3, when Her Majesty was walking her seven corgis, the beasts got into a bowwow row with the Queen Mum's three dogs. Her Majesty waded into the 10-pack—and got a bite on her left hand requiring three stitches. "We advise dog owners to back away from these fights," said British dog expert Roger Mugford. "But the Queen is so courageous!" The Daily Express barked: "Now that the Queen's corgis have bitten the hand that feeds them, why doesn't she change to a decent-looking royal dog?"
CAROLINE'S LAMENT
Any hope that Princess Caroline, 34, might attempt a social comeback in March—five months after the death of her husband, Stefano Casiraghi, 30—were dashed earlier this month when Monaco's de facto First Lady bowed out of two usually stellar affairs. "She still is not ready to attend any social events," says Daphne Tucker, a Monaco arts promoter. "Her sentiments played a role in the cancellation of the [March 16] Rose Ball." Caroline, who has been staying close to home with her three children (including Pierre, 3, above), does not plan to make an appearance to open the Monte-Carlo Springtime of the Arts festival, an event she has headed since 1984.
WINDSOR NOTES
Despite the clucking of royal observers, Prince Charles, 42, has set the date for his first chukker of polo since he broke his arm in a tumble from a pony last June. The Prince saddles up May 16, followed May 19 by a game at Cirencester, where his fall from grace took place....
It looks as if Prince William, 8, will become part of the Eton elite by the time he's 13. Alumni of the 551-year-old school, which sits in the shadow of Windsor Castle, include Wills's grandpa Earl Spencer and uncle Charles Althorp. Wills's father, Charles, steered his son away from his own alma mater, Gordonstoun. Charles loathed the Scottish school because of its spartan regimen and distance from home....
Move over, Madonna: Princess Diana and Charles are stars of an upcoming video due to air July 1 on Britain's BBC in honor of their 10th wedding anniversary (July 29).
