David Lean, 83, the virtuoso British filmmaker who directed such classics as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), died after a long illness on April 15 in London. Lean, who began in movies at 19 by fetching tea at a British film studio, made 16 films during his 49-year career. Natalie Schafer, 90, who played Lovey, the daffy wife of millionaire Thurston Howell III on the popular sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964-67), died of cancer on April 10 in Beverly Hills. Schafer once said that she joined Gilligan's maroons only because the pilot was being filmed in Hawaii. "We never knew how old she was," says costar Bob (Gilligan) Denver. "Every time she was asked her age, she'd reply, 'What was it last year?' "...

Graphic artist Maurice Binder, 73, who designed the erotic opening-title sequences for 14 James Bond movies, died of lung cancer on April 9 in London.

No new kid on the cell block: Donnie Wahlberg, 21, a member of the popular New Kids on the Block pop quintet, was arrested March 27 and charged with first-degree arson for allegedly setting a fire in a Louisville, Ky., hotel, but on April 10, Wahlberg accepted a reduced charge of second-degree criminal mischief. He agreed to make public-service ads about fire safety, drugs and drunk driving in return for an eventual dismissal of the charge.

Jose Canseco, 26, the Oakland A's slugger, and wife Esther Haddad, 24, have balked at splitting. He had filed for a divorce on Jan. 16, stating that his two-year marriage was "irretrievably broken." Now the reunited couple have decided to give their marriage another at bat.
