AH! THE PATHOS! THE BATHOS! THE machos! The 18th annual Daytime Emmy Awards had all three in soap-operatic proportions. For the 12th straight year All My Children's, Susan Lucci was denied Best Actress. Just hours before winning Best Young Actor, Rick Hearst of Guiding Light became a first-time dad. And Peter Bergman, named Best Actor for The Young and the Restless two years after being fired from All My Children, gave teary thanks to his wife, Mary Ellen.

Lucci seemed to have been expecting victory at last and midway through the preawards dinner changed from black to camera-friendly pink. On the other hand, Bernie Barrow of Loving wagered $10 that he would not win Best Supporting Actor. Good news: He did win. Bad news: After the show cash-poor Barrow paid off the bet, lamenting, "That was my cab fare home."
