Sophomore report card: Remember how stiff Roseanne Barr and Candice Bergen were when their sitcoms debuted last year? This year the star of ABC's Roseanne has settled down and become enormously natural—pun intended—within the show's unique style. Bergen is more relaxed, but she still delivers each line with the precious smirk of a little girl in a school Christmas pageant. Luckily for her, the supporting cast and writing go a long way toward disguising her awkward smugness. Bergen thinks she's the next Mary Tyler Moore, and she's wrong. Barr believes she's like no one else you've ever seen, and she's right.

>After eight seasons, it's time to say goodbye to the great old gang on CBS's Newhart (Mon., May 21, 8:30 P.M. ET). Among the many surprises in a wild fantasy finish: Larry's mute brothers, Darryl and Darryl, finally speak (see page 153). On Tuesday afternoon's rerun of Good Times (TBS, May 22, 5:35 P.M. ET), J.J. (Jimmie Walker), worried he has VD, runs into a hippie at the clinic who has the same problem. Under the watch cap, long hair and muttonchop sideburns, that's a young Jay Leno.
