With Giggles, Ghouls and Glamour, Celebs Break Loose for Ghostbusters II

Nobody got slimed, no statues sprang viciously to life, no gunk bubbled up from beneath the street. But the arrival of that signature white ectomobile made it clear that whatever was coming to the neighborhood was weird. Following the Hollywood premiere of Ghostbusters II at Mann's Chinese Theater, limousines lurched to a Palladium bash with a theme that took off from the film's own haunted New Year's Eve. While moviegoing mortals across the nation plunked down $5, $6, $7—even, in some Manhattan theaters, $7.50—to help the sequel bust the three-day weekend record just set by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, high-spirited stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson preened.

"Despite the rumors that I was in New York having a nose job," Ramis announced, "the fact is, I had some gallstones removed."

"And tonight we're going to auction them off," screenwriting partner Aykroyd added. Paying $350 a ticket, partygoers raised $500,000 for St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica.

While Sigourney seemed ready for another outing—"Working with the boys is like getting on a crazy ride on a wild carousel," she said—others were hesitant. "I don't think there's going to be a Ghostbusters III," said Murray. "But maybe a Ghostbusters 2½."
